MXit goes big

Mobile instant messaging (IM) service MXit, which is 30% owned by media company Naspers, is not taking its homegrown success lightly and is working hard to remain South Africa's largest mobile social network.

Ever watched a youngster in a social environment (restaurant for example) - heads down clutching their cellphone for dear life.

I have a few mates that are the same and they're over 27

The MXit generation - big up to Mxit for their success though.

I use MXiT, I won't really diss the service but what does p me off is when people are on it during movies and other stuff, like, out at dinner etc

It's rude, its irratating etc.

But I guess it's like everything else in lfie :)
Used right, its okay, used wrong, its bad.

I'm a regular Mxit user, and its wonderful that they opened up IM to the general public.

But in the last month or so I really got frustrated with the unreliability of message delivery and the lack of support for open standards(Jabber for example) of Mxit. Even my non technical friends are starting to complain and looking at other options.

I find it laughable that Vodacom is trying to implement their own IM service but you must pay per message, but I do believe there is a need for competition like Mig33 (a international option) or any other local option(I don't know if there is?).

So is Mxit is loosing focus on their core market, by going "big"? I personally believe so.

Regards,

zomg, I so totally want a Mxit pants, Mxit shirt, Mxit hat.. maybe even Mxit Phone.... what about a Mxit Car!!! Mxit Radio, Mxit TV station?

Wow, totally heaven!!!

NOT!!!!

Am I the only one that doesn't understand the hype behind Mxit? There are lots of better IM applications out there for your phone. Why is Mxit so popular? :\

EtienneK because instead of just saying there are better solutions, someone will help you install Mxit so that you can talk to them for cheaper.

The older version of mxit also worked on Java MIDP 1.0 phones where most other IM clients I tried only work for MIDP 2.0 phones.

And finally(and I might be wrong) it was the first local free mobile IM client to hit the South African market.

Regards,

cant figure this one out myself... have used it in the past before and saw nothing interesting in it.
I spose it comes down to age - its more for the young peeps who actually enjoy chatting on their cellphones.. and the peeps who dont have internet access all day..
It also opens up the door to all sorts of problems regarding older men, and younger girls, im sure we are all aware of these issues..

the cool drink was a logical step, when I first heard the name I thought it was - hope that somehow there is a health one or two - not just the usual sugar and artificial sweetners

The main reason why people use mxit imho is because of the interface. It is much easier to use than most other options. There are also a load of skins etc.

Regarding the instability, I also experienced it, but they did warn that they would be having some issues as a result of updating their server-side software in order to handle more users at a time. A sacrifice I'm willing to make any day.

mxit is a way of staying in touch, cheaper than sms or a phone call.

I read some article debating the actual number of active users that are using MXiT. If I do some calculations taken from the article:

has since created a platform with the capability of serving 12m ads a day

On average users logon seven times a day

Every time a user logs in they get a five second splash ad displayed on their phone.

12m / 7 = 1.714m active users????

tradepost

Mxit is Brilliant and Im a frequent user, the only thing that works on my nerves is when you have a menu with (eg.) 5 options to choose from. This is now when you start playing with tradepost etc.

To select option 4, you then have to go into the "write mode" and physically type in a 4 and submit your request. Wait for a reply...... and repeat the above mentioned process for the next available option.

Otherwise, well done

More like geeks in their 20's and older men posing as younger girls.... :)

Like on the internet, where men are men, women are men and children
are cops :).

I know ppl older than that thats plain addictive, but they wanna preach to there children:mad:
I have mxit yes,but its just to check for messages:eek:

When are they introducing VOIP chat?
They can do it.

I am still trying to figure out the point of mxit... I have gtalk on my phone and that suits me fine... I use 1 IM system across everything, much easier to manage....

Yes but if all your friends are using Mxit then is just easier... unless they make an IM that integrates Mxit like 2go.

Plus think of the average mxit user. They dont have internet to sign up to gmail and gtalk, and no, you can not sign up via your mobile for some dumb reason.

Mxit is pure, good-old-fashioned, thinking of your market and creating something a) they want and b) they can easily use.

So, yes, lots of people here dont get mxit but when you look at what they really done, they need to be looked as an excellent business idea that was executed correctly :)
