Hi guys.

So as I lay in my bed browsing away on my laptop connected with GConnect 3G at full 7.2mbps I started thinking.

The current ADSL situation in South Africa is actually horrible to say the least. Is it really your moneys worth to upgrade to a 4mbps if you can only get sync'd at 2mbps. why isn't Telkom upgrading their existing lines and services instead of wasting money on a 3G packages(only in south africa where a fixed line company has a christmas special on wireless connections).

how does Morocco with a lower GDP get to have a comfortable 6mbps connection and we cant even sync properly. I wanted to ask my father for a 4mbps connection for Christmas but looking also at the cap problem it might not be worth it. i mean freaking R30/GB while again Morocco has uncapped 4mbps at roughly R250pm. this is a long post and i am possibly gonna get flamed but that is my 2 cents worth about ADSL. and im forced to use it because i don't get low latency on HSDPA. That is Telkom for you eating away at my soul...

thats marketing ploy :) a 384kbps DSL probably downloads faster than 7.2mbps 3G.

Morocoo is heavily influenced by Europe. They probably also have government people who actually want to do their job, rather than drive a Ranger Rover. So put all that together and its easy to understand that their infrastructure would be better.
 
I'm just curious. Has anybody actually compared Morocco's network size compared to Telskums? I'm certainly NOT defending Telskum but it wouldn't really be fair to compare them if Morocco has a much smaller network. Having 6Mb ADSL at only say 100 exchanges is very different to 512Kb ADSL at a couple thousand exchanges. Does Morocco have ADSL in small towns outside the big cities? Anybody have any detail on this?

Nah i'd rather go live in sweden in the cold(better than heat) and connect at 100mbps @Mamajyot.

Well you have a valid point there about Morocco being heavily influenced by Europe and also the fact that they have a smaller infrastructure. But that doesn't mean South Africa can't manage a big one( wait i take that back. hehe). Why isn't Helkom helping us instead of shafting us(i know ,the money) but isn't there something we can do? i mean people of South Africa survived 1994, a few wars and swine flu. i'm sure there is something to be done. we can easily achieve the same as any 1st world country with Seacom and WACS...
 
kaufies has the right idea there. sure telkom is moving up but at a 56k speed. So what can the general public do to speed it up except riots and/or anything that includes a nationwide internet standstill.

yeah i have. sorry i only now came back to you. i was working last night. hehe. uhm i checked on http://www.iam.ma/Particuliers/Inte...t/Menara_ADSL/Pages/TarifsADSLpermanents.aspx. Now as far as my french is, and what google can translate it came to round 400 Dirham. where you get 99 cents per dirham so it works out very cheap. sorry, i used the 250 from another forum but upon closer inspection the post was in 2006. :o.

Nope, let me stop you there, bcos you are incorrect.

For several years [and up until recently], I had a Telkodemonopolies "Fast DSL up to 384kbps" line [although it used to be called something else until ASASA forced Telkodemonopolies to change its product names to remove false speed claims [I notice that speed is once again included in the product names], and my line maxed out at 313.6kbits/s using multiple download threads and never got better than 100kbits/s on the uplink [that was a good few minutes about once a month when there coincidentally might have been a full moon].

While HSPA might not be as slow and steady as ADSL admittedly was most of time, I can assure you that Fast ADSL from Telkodemonopolies is in fact the slowest thing apart from dialup in South Africa.

The way I see it, its quite simple. You own a company that provides a service, you are the only company in the entire country that is legally able to provide that service. You have a 1/2 + a mill subscribers that won't really go anywhere else because other services offered are even more unreliable or expensive.

You now have 1/2 a mill people wanting more for the same cost but its going to cost you X amount of money to implement but you know they have no where else to go because the gov says so.

Would you really even bother?
