As a commuter have a look at the NC700. Really great bikes and you should be able to pick a good second hand one up in your budget.

Well, I see the Ninja is around 55K, so let's assume that (although **** knows where I am realistically going to get the money from, but this is an issue for another day).

I'd prefer new, but am open to good second hand deals, for sure. In fact, it may be more sensible to get a cheaper 2nd hand to work as my initial 'training wheels'.

Jirre dude.

For R 55k you can buy way more than a 300cc :p

I'll get you some nice examples.

The thing is, I specifically want a smaller bike, as I am a rank beginner, and the consensus seems to be that this particular bike is plenty powerful, even for seasoned riders.

Why would I want something more powerful? Honest question, given this thing appears to go around 180 KM/h and accelerates like a rocket?

This would suite your needs.

CBR 500 - Demo

As to the rest of your questions:

You come from a scooter. Even a scooter can go 140 why buy a bike? because you can. 300cc sounds good now. You ride it for 4 months then you will want something slightly heavier and more powerful. I wouldn't suggest anything smaller than 600. But that 500cc is a very good deal.

+1 for second hand Honda NC700, especially if you are looking to commute

I guess more importantly you first need figure out if you want a nice ride, or a good looking ride

For sure, I understand that, and I suspect I'd probably progress upwards over time. Thanks for the suggestion on the bike. Horrible colours though. :D

Nice ride would be more important to me, ultimately.

Nice ride (ie comfortable in traffic) = upright position = NC700 or lower tier adventure bikes imo. Plenty around 55k (just checked the tree of gums)

To keep dry you will need
Proper winter gloves (bonus they keep you warm) (double bonus some adventure bikes have heated grips)
Waterproof boots that also come up a fair amount (ie close about half way up your calves) otherwise water will run down your pants and into your shoes. You do sometimes get sets that just go over everything, so you put booties over normal shoes
Waterpoof pants and jacket - iirc ±R700 from FlyingBrick

I have, and I think it's beautiful, but it's getting on the pricey side.

No more pricey than that Ninja, and has more power and better looks.

Also has ABS which I don't think the Ninja has but I might be wrong.

I wouldn't buy anything without ABS.

The Ninja does have ABS (55K), compared to the KTM (67K). Those were the prices quoted by the respective dealerships - Perhaps it's changed since?

Personally I would take the Duke second hand over the Ninja new. Just personal preference.
