You'll have to specify which one ;) In the past the adventure had different gear ratios, and a heavier flywheel. I think the water cooled ones now share gear ratios, but the flywheel is still different. And of course the 30-40kg difference

There are 3 reasons why I won't get one though - 1) Price :p 2) Small stock screen 3) Did I say price?
But I think if you compare it to the competition the pricing is actually not that bad. Get all the same features on all of them and the difference is under 5% or so (although I stand under correction).

R1200 GSA (LC) has a touring screen, unless you are tall like me (6'5"), the screen is damn good. But the brackets are not up to standard, way too much movement when fully extended. I have had my screen adjustment mechanism replaced under warranty, and I have installed a Wunderlich screen bracket to prevent any further movement. The LC Adv has a slightly different angle on the front rake (angle of the forks) to the GS. When riding you dont feel the weight or size difference (Adv is a fat bastard). When you add all the costs of adding bars pannier racks etc to the GS, an Adv actually seems more sensible. I still prefer the look of the GS, but I can do 600km on a tank if I drive very carefully. On the flip side, at least 75% of the riders you will travel with will have GS, so you are limited to their tank range anyway. Ride comfort tho on any GS / GSA is bloody brilliant!

Yeah I've heard he non-adventure is almost a pure road bike.

Is the 800 Adv vs Normal also that different? Didn't feel like it.

I'm really not too familiar with the 800 - it is almost an automatic "will never buy" because the back seat is not pillion friendly imo due to the fuel tank being there.

If you are bored during the day you can go look here (full parts list of all BMW vehicles) and check. At the very least the adv will have a bigger fuel tank and thus more wet weight

Hoping that all my paperwork gets done today so I can pickup my new bike. Going from 1200 GSA to MT09 Tracer. The lighter nimbler bike is what I am going for at the moment and there is so much torque and power that it just brings a smile to my face as soon as I twist the ear.
My previous bike

Definitely get the impression that most riders on MyBB are the touring bike good old lads you see on the road a lot.

Always the most courteous road users by far but I didn't imagine that most riders on MyBB are over 50.

Seriously though: where are the street bike guys at?

So I get this urge every year to go get my learners again (currently have A1 license..haven't ridden in over 10 years) because I REALLY like the XT250 and REALLY want one.

What's the best bike school/licencing department these days? I heard Krugersdorp is a way better bet than Randburg.

30 year old riding a cruiser just to mess with things SlinkyMike.
:D

I think Pitbull is on a crotch rocket and I dont know if the truimph fanboys will label their bikes as touring bikes or street bikes....

Bite your tongue Sir. My XC is a dirt bike that I regularly use on tar. It's a dualie.

so you are a bi biker :P

see for me it is all about power. not of the bike, of the rider.

On a crotch rocket you are leaning forward, your feet are behind your bum, and there are valid reasons for this. aerodynamics and all that.
unfortunately it makes it feel (to me at least) like you are hugging the bike and begging and pleading with it to obey your commands and go around corners (I realise this is not actually the case, but it is the perception in my head)

on a cruiser I sit back grab the handlebars and take control. I am in control the bike is doing what I want it to do. grabbing the bull by the horns in my head at least feels like the same action as grabbing the handlebars.

duel purpose or tourers just cant make up their mind. you sit upright but your feet are behind you. and you can lean forward and still be comfortable.

The handling of a bike has less to do with seating position than it does with rake and trail.

I understand that you are speaking mostly of the subjective experience of various seating positions but it is a mistake to associate those feelings with how the bile actually handles.

In other words: your cruiser handles like a ship. Deal with it.

Proudly Bi yes. I cut my teeth on dirt bikes. The upright riding position is most comfortable for me. I've owned a lot of variants of bikes (super bike / cruisers / dirt / dual). Financial downsizing (read: divorce) saw me having to sell everything and keep what I could afford. I chose what I loved most. That was the option of being able to go cross country via tar OR dirt. There's so much gravel road in our country and sadly most 2WD vehicles can't access the stunning vistas that a lot of dirt roads afford you.

cut my teeth on a scooter. was hooked. then a 50cc off road because I am a male south african and that is as important as Rugby and Biltong.
then in Uni I had a Vuka for between campuses, that I rode between Boksburg and Pretoria becasue reasons.
that eventually died because I did not service it.

then I bought the Superlight because a new bike with a warranty is better than a second hand bike for the same price right? (WORST DECISION EVER).

after 2 years I cut my losses, took out a loan for double the amount I needed, sold the POS bought the Virago.
when that is paid off I will consider buying another bike, but that Virago will be mine until some Crazy event forces me to get rid of it.

Anyone know a good place to buy gear in Cape Town?

I'm a beginner biker, do I need to buy a full kit? I was thinking of just buying the Helmet, Gloves and Jacket first and the boots and pants at a later stage?

Also what kind of Brand, Helmet should I be looking at?
