So, I've never driven a bike before.

Mine is arriving on Monday, and Tuesday I will need to get to work on it. Any advice? Good resources to figure out how to drive the damn thing?

Riding a bike in traffic is not some thing you want to do if you are not 100% confident and the bike is fully under control , this is your life on the line here .

Sure, true. I will probably avoid any sort of rush-hour traffic until I am completely comfortable. I've driven a scooter for a couple of years, so I'm at least used to being on two wheels.

That's kinda cutting it close. How far is it to your work? Maybe, at first, get a route where you can keep it slow and with few to no traffic.

Ok at least you have ridden two wheels , so not so bad i was under the impression you have never ridden a bike .

you guys are making me wonder about my helmet now.

I have a Nitro. Cant find the exact model number. had a Shark before this.

And the fit is not great. the Large is too tight and hte Extra large is a little loose. not a lot, but there is a small amount of movement.

I paid R1000 for it, but it was at the full throttle clearance store, the real store is up the road, so I just assumed it was marked down due to the clearance store closing down soon....

I can't comment on Nitro, but yes R1000 does seems a bit cheap even on clearance unless it's a hideous colour or something. Full face?

As for fit you can often do a larger shell with cheek pads from a smaller helmet. I did that once before and it made all the difference.

Bell is the best back for buck safety wise. 5 stars from R2500-R5000.

Some useful crash testing results:

More expensive lid = better features, but not always better safety
Take for example the shark evoline 3 modular. It flipped open 43% of the time during tests. Personally, I'd never buy a modular (and I wear glasses).

Yup also don't trust the modular or see the point.

Full face all the way.

I have an HJC , it is the only helmet i can live with , it fits and does not feel claustrophobic .
It was R1200 cheap but is rite for me .

I have a few mods to go on there soon .

I've decided to go with the HJC IS-17 helmet. It seems to have mostly positive reviews and passes DOT,SNELL and SHARP certifications. I measured my head and its 56cm which is a size Small?

I'm also thinking of buying this body armour

or this

which I will be wearing under a RST ventek jacket.

These gloves?

Too much?

The jacket comes with built in armour, I think your motion would be limited with the addition of the body armour, not to mention kaaark hot! Helmet is better than the cheapy stuff. Is it a composite shell or not? Personally I wont buy anything other than Arai. Their outer shell and breakaway bits are top notch. The gloves, perfect, I have a similar pair for summer. Comfy and not hot. Consider a neck brace for the added protection. Leatt have a nice dualsport version which is not bulky the STX Road.

Then for pants, check out X - Kulcha, local is lekka. Their clothing is really good quality, even my BMW Motorrad shop stocks their stuff...

Ya, I wouldn't get body armour for on the road - you're not expecting to go over the handlebars 10 times a day like you would doing motocross :p

And I cant stress this enough - the helmet needs to fit right. So while you may like the choice you've made you may find it simply doesnt work right. When I first went looking a helmet I thought was perfect started giving me pain after 5 minutes for example because it was ever so slightly the wrong shape or too small. You must wear it for around 10 minutes before you walk out the door with it to find out this kind of stuff, I can't imagine what it would be like wearing a helmet that has me in constant pain.

Mike, what bike you getting again? And what area? Looks to be a place in WC doing some clearance specials

And do what, pretend to be a member of Daft Punk for a bit? :)

Thanks for this mate, valuable information here.

Ya it does feel a bit odd :p But the shop I went to the guys were helpful and had no problem with me making sure I got a helmet that was right for me. I think I ended up trying on some boots and jackets during those 10 minutes to pass the time

Yeah, my main issues are obviously just with the general handling of the bike, and changing gears. I'm comfortable being in traffic, provided I can manoeuvre the thing.

I'll come round on my bike and teach you :p Don't worry its nice and light at ±265kg

But I rate just some mucking around in your street in first gear is required. Same as you would if you were learning to drive a car: Put in first, clutch control, pull away, stop. Rinse repeat.

Not sure tbh. I was looking at a Ninja 300/250 but never expected the gear to be so expensive. Looking at almost 10k just for gear and no way am I getting on a bike without full kit. I'm looking at something around 30k now so not expecting too much :( This won't be for commuting except for the odd occasion.

I got the same from Trac Mac, it comes with Pin lock which is a bonus for the cold weather. Sun visor also nice.
Has space for your glasses frames down the sides. My main complaint is it lets too much of a draft in from the chin curtain, it's needs enlarging.
Go try the small on, get as tight a fit as you can.

Buy a buff, wear it just around your neck to rid yourself of any wind under the lip...

BTW, you guys seen the BMW G 310 they will be releasing this year to compete with the likes of the KTM Duke 390?

Cant find any pricing info yet...
