Buy a buff, wear it just around your neck to rid yourself of any wind under the lip...

BTW, you guys seen the BMW G 310 they will be releasing this year to compete with the likes of the KTM Duke 390?

Cant find any pricing info yet...

Got my learners and been using a mate's bike to practice for a bit, was seriously considering the Duke 390 as a first bike (would somehow lie to the wife, say it only costs half what it actually does). But that BMW does look tasty.

The Duke 390 is R59K, given KTM is always cheaper than Beemer, I would guess the G310 would come in at least R65 - 70K, maybe a tad more.

But they are chasing the KTM's market directly with this bike, wouldn't be surprised if they undercut it.

Also locally BMW is often way cheaper spec for spec.

What's too much for the Ninja? Maybe the owner is willing to negotiate the price. Would 30k be ok?

Would the ER6 not be too big for a beginner?

In my opinion the ER6 is a better bike for a beginner.

How tall are you?

The ER6 would last you years while the Ninja would be a stepping stone only.

Don't be fooled by the large capacity. It's a Parallel Twin and therefore more about torque than power.

It will handle highways better where the 300 will be straining and struggling.

Those Ninja's were about 35k new from what I recall. Obviously R/$ and inflation makes the new price higher but still.

It's not a great value proposition at the price in my opinion.

I would say Bell is your best value and safest option but has less features.

Shoei and AGV are normally very different in fit and both are the pricier options but have more features (sun visors etc).

HJC I can't comment on personally but always saw them as cheaper nastier options.

I will never buy a Shark again and would probably try and HJC before I'm forced to do so.
I have an HJC (IS-16), and coming from a Shark S900, I much prefer the Shark. Less noise, better fit, better visor(s), and prettier. But I got the HJC for a massive discount- helps if the sales lady knows and likes you :p

So, my first bike. Got a good deal on a CBR 250R. I've had it for about four hours, and my inaugural ride was, erm, well - You gotta start somewhere. Changing gears with my left foot is extraordinarily confusing.

Loving it, but I can tell I'm going to be fantasizing about something more meaty sooner rather than later.

Absolutely heinous photos, I am aware... I need to figure the camera on my phone. :o

Yeah look I went from a top of the line Shoei to a Shark and the noise and quality was horrendous in comparison but the after sales service was the worst of all.

In the S900 price class it's a different story.

Very Lekker man.

You'll get used to it before 100km is out.

Then you can learn about downshifting and rev matching.

And counter steering.

And and and.

Looks great bro , enjoy .

So I've come to grips with basic driving, and man oh man is it fun!

Should have got a bike years ago.

Anyone know of any beginner/safety courses in Cape Town?

Yeah, my main issues are obviously just with the general handling of the bike, and changing gears. I'm comfortable being in traffic, provided I can manoeuvre the thing.

Find a parking lot that's empty after hours and do figure eights until you're giddy.

Then practice emergency braking, find out how much pressure will just start to lift your back wheel - that's your limit.

Release the clutch slowly until the bike just starts to move, that's the beginning of the friction zone, now see how slowly you can do a figure eight. Low speed maneuvers are where you're most likely to drop the bike in traffic.

When you can do all of that stuff on command and under varying conditions you're getting to a place where you can really control your motorcycle and that means that you can start to take safety seriously, which in turn means you're in a position to really enjoy riding (when you can do it with as much safety as possible.)

How does she wheelie? Select first gear. RPM up to 6000. Drop the clutch. No feathering. Just drop it. Take pics

Joking. Do NOT try it. PLEASE...!

Grats on the new scoot. Many many safe and happy miles...

Solid advice, thanks guys.

And no fear, I would not in a million years try to wheelie the thing...

I can't wait to leave work and take it for a spin. Going to head up and over the hills in Tokai, and then around the back to Simon's Town...

MyBB ;)

There are two things, the first is handling your bike. SlinkyMike covered an excellent exercise to get you going there. Beyond that there really isn't much more to do. It is all just different low speed manoeuvres.
Second is how to ride defensively, and that you may already know from your scooter days. If not... MyBB :p

edit: a simple thing to get in the habit of, I prefer to cover my brake/clutch levers. This means I always have two fingers resting on the levers so if needed I can engage them a little bit earlier than if they were resting on the handlebars.

Copa, if you don't mind me asking, how much did that bike set you back? Also looking at getting one soon and yours seems really nice.

Gawd I am so jealous. Riding in JHB is nice. But a cup of tea is "nice". To be able to ride in CPT

Discovered over the weekend that I don't need clutch. Just roll the throttle in 2nd and at about 7000rpm up the front lifted.
That was with my 100+ kg weight leaning forward into the wind.

Woops.

I don't wheelie :D
