I've since been diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

So mostly my back and wrists but not necessarily the bike's fault. It just amplified my condition.

I also suffer from Crohn's, and recently sold one of my bikes due to the riding position.

Interesting.

Glad to know I'm not the only one and this would be the first to find another also riding.

People think I'm just sensitive or moan too easily but it really can take all the fun out of it.

What did you sell? What was the primary pain with the riding position ?

First longish trip done. Got to harties ok but jeez my hands tingled from the vibration for ages...

Harties is like riding to work. It has the same amount of traffic.

Engine just seized I think. Sudden loss of power, clanking noises, smoke.

Thanks Monday. You're awesome.

Meh, buying a car. Can't get the bike until the license thing is sorted and can't survive with no wheels. So a car it is.

@Baxteen - Could they help you?

I have found a guy. yes. but after speaking to a few people, the only person I actually felt I could trust after chatting about the problems is the guy Skeptic refered to to in PM.

its way out of my way, and it is going to cost me a bit, but its someone that from the start was not afraid to tell me where and why he would take the bike depending on what is wrong.

the other places all felt like they had no clear plan, and would simply look for a new part, something that cannot be done (if that is the problem).

now I need to free up money somehow, get the bike to the other side of the world (or it feels like it anyway) and then wait for him to get back to me with a full quote.

but I spoke to everyone mentioned in this thread, two people I was referred to from another friend, two guys I googled, and then the Guy skeptic refered me too.
only the Guy skeptic referred me to felt like he had a clear plan.

because I have been struggling for so long, I have more of an idea of what needs to happen, and the other guys just felt like they wanted to take me for a ride when it comes to money.

Well that's good, I'm happy for you!

What bike is it?

What bike is it?

it is a 1997 Yamaha Virago 535. that possibly has a borked Crank/CAM due to an fall that caused a plug to break off and brain the oil on the side of the road (I did not notice) then starting the bike ruined the big end bearings.

if just the bearings are dead, its an easy fix.
if the CAM is dead, it cant be replaced in SA, trust me I have been trying.
if the Crank is dead, it can be replaced, and even repaired, but a lot of people um and ah a lot at the idea of sending the part to a engineer to fix something instead of just replacing it...

....

So hold more with your legs and release the grip. Also make sure your arms are bent and not locked straight.

...

...

This makes me hold on too tight and tires out my hands. Have to consciously remind myself to relax and not fight the natural balance....

Thanks for the tips.

Now my legs hurt.

Going to get a pair of grips.

Ok, so something which has come up for me, which sadly I got fined for is an illegal lane splitting move in traffic. My question to the more intelligent riders, when is lane splitting illegal? Yes, it is legal in most cases, but clearly it's illegal to split lanes in certain circumstances. Do any of you know?

It's a fitness thing. Doesn't happen overnight.

Also don't over cook it with the legs now.

Get the grip puppies. About 16 pounds and just slides over existing grips.

The Grip Buddies are similar and people save about them but haven't seen them first hand.

Did you cross a solid?

Did you split into oncoming traffic?

That's usually what I would call illegal as they apply equally to cars and motorcycles and all times.

The problem with us riding bikes is that we get used to being in motion and then start taking liberties that we consider normal and legal and carry on until advised otherwise.

Technically even approaching a traffic light if you are straddling the solids between lanes or touching the white lines at the front of the queue that's illegal.

Same goes for any solid really if your mirror is even just hanging over it.

Also if you are crossing yellow triangle zones that's also a no no.

This wasn't on Marine Drive where you cross over into the left lane to head onto the N1 by any chance?
