But on a more serious note....

ATTENTION!!! All BMW R1200GS LC riders. We have just returned from our Zim Gravel Travel Tour, 11 bikes started the trip and 10 finished the trip. We nearly lost one of our riders on a 2015 BMW R1200GS after he was involved in a serious accident on a remote gravel road in Zimbabwe due to the failure of the stanchions on the front suspension. He was riding about 80km/h when the stanchion failed causing him to loose control of the bike and crash off the road into the bush. The stanchion failure caused total loss of steering and there was no way to avoid the accident. The front suspension stanchion popped off spraying oil all over the rider. He was fortunate not to get seriously injured. Had the stanchion failed a few seconds earlier he may not have been so lucky as there was a 10 meter drop off the road. BMW SA have not been at all accommodating stating that this is "the first time" they have heard of this happening and that they could not assist the rider outside SA borders and that basically he was on his own stranded out in the bush. We paid a local to drive him all the way to Harare where a pickup was organized to go back and collect the bike in the bush and then transport him and his bike 700km back to SA. This bike went for a full service, new clutch and the stanchions and shock sliders were replaced ( for the 2nd time) a week before the trip! PLEASE PLEASE check your bike properly everyday before you ride, it could cost you your life if you don't!!
I have no words to describe the anguish we felt to almost lose a rider and friend in the middle of nowhere. Not only did his trip come to a premature end due to this failure but it certainly left us fellow riders angry as this accident was no fault of his........... this could have ended a lot worse ..............hopefully BMW will do the right thing now that the bike is back in SA.The problem is however bigger than just one bike in my opinion, hopefully more is done to sort out this issue before there is a loss of life.........GUYS, NO BRAND BASHING HERE PLEASE< THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE.

This is a known issue - dating back as for as 2014. It is such a well known issue that a petition on change.org has been started earlier this year to try & get BMW to firstly acknowledge, and secondy recall the bikes in question (1200 GS & GSA).

Funnily enough BMW issued a recall for this in 2013...... but seemingly have not rectified the problem if it is still happening in 2014 to 2016 bikes.

BMW SA must have known about it if an official factory recall was done? So them saying it's the first time they've ever seen something like this seems odd. Unless the recall was never implemented in SA.

But do yourself a favour and just get a local price too for the OEM ones. You might be surprised.

The Oxfords won’t be dramatically cheaper either. Still looking at a grand or two.

I do seem to recall you need to inform them if you plan to.

Might not be every single country but I definitely saw it in the paperwork.

Actually might be confusing it with my insurance.
 
For the wee bit more I would rather stick to the tried and trusted Oxford.

Many people use and love all their products.

I only have a rain suit from them.

K must try find a nearby supplier. Meantime I am also asking the dude who lives across the road, as he seems to know a thing or two about bikes :)
