Not the best example no, but he is still alive (well, when I last heard him anyway :D )
 
Sixteen contenders line up for SA Bike of the Year

Sixteen motorcycles have been selected as finalists for the 2017 South African Pirelli Bike of the Year competition.
The judges, comprising motorcycling journalists from all over South Africa including this publication’s motoring editor Denis Droppa, will test-ride the bikes and announce a winner in Gauteng early next month.

This year’s line up comprises a diverse mix of motorcycles including sports bikes, commuters, adventure bikes, cruisers and cafe racers, with prices ranging from R62 990 all the way to R241 990.

The reigning SA Bike of the Year in the prestigious annual competition is the Triumph Thruxton R, a 1200cc retro-styled café racer. The event is organised by Harry Fisher and Mat Durrans of the Bike Show.

The 2017 finalists are:

BMW GS 1200 Rallye (R241 990)

Ducati Multistrada 950 (R180 000)

Ducati Supersport (R169 000)

Harley Davidson 750 Street Rod (R115 000)

Honda Fireblade (R240 000)

Kawasaki Z1000SX (R155 995)

I think it could make a pretty sweet (but slow) cafe racer :D

I'm going to be surprised if the engine still turns over when I go back next weekend
 
My bet is on the G310R but only because of the "hype". Personally, bring on that Triumph Street Scrambler :love:

Think it's a cool project man. Engine may need some TLC, but hopefully still strong.

I think it is more of an excuse for people to get overly loud pipes "because they are liking to be saving my life you know." Sure, maybe 1 in a 1000 times they are useful, rest of the time its just another thing that makes non bikers dislike bikers

I do agree that it’s a bit of an excuse to just put crazy loud **** on bikes.

The moments where it’s saved my ass has been when I approached a car or pedestrian from the front in their full view and they didn’t see me at all because they weren’t looking for me.

The added noise in all cases was enough to wake them up and take notice.

When lane splitting and the sound travelling behind you it’s utterly meaningless. Unless you are one of those chops who forces their right of way on others by clutching and flat lining the thing.

There are situations as well where it’s easier/faster to pull the clutch and give a little Rev to say “hey I’m here”. Especially on the BMW with that stupid navigation wheel making the horn sit a million miles away. Granted this works just fine even right now with my stock pipe on, but I’m sure it would work better with a slightly louder one. As per topic though it wouldn’t work at all on an electric.

So there is the middleground where at least some noise is beneficial over no noise at all.

My bet is between the G310R and the baby Multistrada.

I just don’t see the G310R winning in the SA bigger is better obsessed culture but I expect it will get a special mention.

I’ve never seen an actually fast Café racer. At least not by modern standards.

Also never been on one that actually felt safe and predictable either.
 
Wonder what will be involved to conferd on of my scooters to electric ... only need about 50-80km range, but want to be able to go 110km/h+.

Motor+controller +lipo battery pack ... run the motor thru the CVT or direct drive ... or hub motor.
Seems motor will have to at least 2Kw...

I have a couple i am working on , a Yamaha TT600 i am putting a yamaha XT600e motor in it for the electric start , i am to old to do the kick thing now and still busy with a SR500 revamp .

Very nice bikes those TT600's.

I miss my XT550. I still regret writing the poor thing off :(

The SR500 was a cafe racer type bike wasn't it? Buddy of mine had a SR400 that he wanted to build up but he couldn't find a CDI. They were apparently notorious for killing their own CDI units
