Which is just fine on a flat road.

But try doing that up Orange Street towards Buitengracht and getting a surprise red then you are in for a bad time.

Whereas being in the habit to stop in 1st with left foot down would avoid all of it and you could still just skip to neutral if it takes too long.

At the end of the day rather do what's comfortable than trying to force something unnatural.
 
I tend to lean over to the right when I come to a stop by putting my right foot out. Once stopped I engage neutral and keep my foot ready to engage first gear in case I need to do a speedy getaway (I am also paranoid about whoever stops behind me, if they stop...)

A bit off the current topic but if I were to say have R3000 for a new helmet for on road use, which brands and models would come recommended? The last helmet I bought cost me R750 brand new. I currently have a normal VR-1 fullface lid which is a few years old and in dire need of replacement

A lid with some built-in sun visors would be nice, but I am a bit out the loop WRT what is available and what they cost. Adding BT functionality is also something I would like, but at the budget listed it would probably have to be an aftermarket solution. Above all it needs to be quiet. Anything above 80kph in my current one is murder on my eardrums.

I'm partial to Shark helmets. But they're just shy of the R3k mark, if memory serves.

Also, I tend to stop with my foot down pretty much as the mood takes me. Can be left or right. I haven't noticed which I favour. Although one should be stopped with the left foot down, the right on the on the foot peg, covering the rear brake, in my opinion- with the clutch in and 1st gear engaged.
 
I had my eye on the Shark S700 which seems pretty well priced on full throttle.

I'll maybe swing past Yamaha later on in the week and see what they have. Any other brands to look out for? Is Airoh a well-respected brand at all?

Bell is the safest for the money.

Sun Visors make it a bit trickier though as they don't tend to use them.
 
I have an S700. Only complaints I have are no cutouts for headphones, and the sun visor steams up in the morning.

But then, I have no other point of reference to compare it to.
 
Compared to my current HJC (is-16 or some such), I'll take the S700 every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.
 
I actually like my HJC IS-17. Nice and quiet, scored high in the impact testing, and if I'm not mistaken, was around 3500....

Pity about the sunvisors. I have no issue with using sunnies while riding but would prefer a built-in solution if possible.

I wonder if some anti-mist spray would mitigate the steaming up to an extent? Thanks for the feedback :)

Thanks for all the replies gents. I'll see if I can get around to the shops to see what they have this week

Probably would. I haven't even tried TBH, I just deal without the visor in the mornings. As soon as the weather warms up, no problem at all.

Friend of mine says the same. While he loves his IS-17, I don't love my IS-16

Seems the newer version is simply much better overall.
 
About the feet on ground issue: I always used to put only my right foot down, since that's my dominant leg. I've started trying to change that habit, either both feet or left foot. With right on brake. (both if the south easter is going).

Reason I've changed is that the new bike needs some throttle, especially on a slope, to pull off. Tricky to get that right by braking and throttle on same hand. Easier to use foot brake.

It is possible to brake and throttle with the same hand. I do it when I pull my bike into garage at night. I find it's mostly possible when you 2 finger brake, allowing your other fingers to grip the bar.

Then the rear of the bike lifts as you let the clutch out, just release brake and away you go...

For me at least

I much preferred my S700 over my Skwal. Just sat nicer :/

I have an Airoh, was about R3.5 from Honda when I bought my bike. Has a built in sun visor and cut-outs for my headphones (which aren't the best, but better than nothing).

S700 Prime has the sunvisor built in (if there was any confusion).

Bell has this reactive/transition visor but the visor alone costs like R3k :/ Helmet total was about R6k last time I checked.
