[MENTION=50712]SCOOBY DOO[/MENTION] - where are you doing your sprocket and chain? I literally paid R1500 yesterday to get a D.I.D 525 X-ring installed. My sprocket was still fine, but they had them on the shelf for R300 - 600 - brand dependent. The R1500 is inclusive of an hours labour.

So if they charge you anything more than that, you are indeed being shafted.

Friend got hit with a vehicle side mirror, polo playa, squeezing past him at around 35-40km/h -he was walking though. Mirror hit his hand, and he cracked 1 or 2 bones in there IIRC - this was a couple of years back too, so the mirrors folded easier back then too.

You betcha he was feeling that.
 
Randburg MC charged me R1200 for an O ring chain and fitment...

EK chainring? I got a quote from them as well they said that it'll be R1100 for the EK chain. Which according to them is equivalent to the D.I.D - did some research online, and it seems that in other countries, the EK is substantially cheaper - which it really wasn't here. I figured R300 more for the D.I.D was worth it.

I don't know to be honest.
The guys at the local Honda dealership had a look at it and said it was the right chain - was good enough for me.

Probably my cycling background screwing me here. Cause there it can make a big difference between brands, even the better "off-brands" perform worse than the well known brands.

Since I heard my chain making noises on friday, I've learnt about:
*Chain pitch - so there's a number 525, 530 etc that relates to this.
*The torsional strength of chains
*The wear index
*Difference between o-rings and x-rings

Saw a couple of eyes glaring at me this morning that looked suspiciously a lot like the new Duke 700 headlights. The bike was physically smaller than I'd thought it would be (if that was indeed what it was)

I had a fun weekend, when my ABS sensor just stopped working on friday. Was able to ask around on several forums and in the end it turns out it was a dirty ABS ring. That's all. I was ready to suck it up and go to BMW and get reamed, but no. A simple wipe with a tissue and my issue was sorted.

Part of the reason I went with one of the most prevalent bikes in the class. Other part of it was that the Africa Twin second hand market hadn't caught up to my budget yet :)

(just need to get myself a chain breaker and stuff)
 
Do bikes have a warranty clause like cars where the warranty is void if the bike is serviced at a place other than the manufacturer's authorised service centre for a certain amount of time?

Although I can't say for sure whether it's there or not you can bet your bottom dollar it will be the case as South Africa still doesn't have legislation that supports warranties otherwise.

However depending on the warranty item in question you'll quickly know if it's worth the fight or not.

Often the benefit of sticking to the dealer is when out of warranty such as was my case they'll make magic happen and do goodwill claims which will never happen if you serviced it elsewhere.

I've changed sprockets on bike without even removing chain but you need a chain tool to do the job properly on the chain itself.

If you've adjusted chain slack before it's not really a much more technical job.

Definitely sounds like BMW owner given the experience I have had with my local dealer

I was trying to be a hipster with my Triumph. Why be like everyone else when you can have a Triumph.

I've never deviated from using anything but the dealer...so it's a BMW, Triumph, Buell and Suzuki owner thing. :)

I've had out of warranty coverage from all four.

Not sure if you implied your experience was positive or negative?
