Tragic! I am having my first lesson this Saturday and I have been so excited I can barely sit still. Now I don't know...

Just be mindful that a lot of what went wrong was potentially within Fanie’s control or a lack there of on his part.

Keep that sensibility at the back of your mind that stuff doesn’t just happen to you and that you are equally accountable for it and then you’ll be fine.

Do they know what happened?

Hi Guys,

The padding inner of my helmet has torn so stitching on the sides have come out and foam is exposed.
Does anyone know where i can get my helmet repaired ?

If the helmet is older than 5 years I'd recommend getting a new one. Otherwise the store you bought it from should be able to source the relevant spares (assuming it's a half decent brand helmet)

There is speculation. Possibly having right of way when someone turned in front of him. Overall, the accident seems very much similar to one that did the rounds on Youtube - guy going down a country lane in England I think, when someone turned in front of him as well.

Where he had his accident, is exactly where I had my first accident ever in a car. So I'll second that people there drive weird.

Does anyone remember when Faans got this bike?

I tried searching, but the search is apparently quite broken. Think it was around 4 months ago - IIRC he got it just before I got mine. He even bought a new helmet at the time. And one for his wife..

Found the post.

Feb 23rd. So almost 6 months to the day.

This really upset me. I don't know Fanie but I always enjoyed his posts. The rats etc etc. Where did the accident occur? (Think he commuted to Centurion where I live). RIP Fanie

Glenhove in Houghton.
Commuted from Kempton to Sandton usually

Seems other guys didn't elaborate but basically T-boned a car full on from the left (front door area).

Presumed he had right of way and that someone skipped a stop/robot (I don't know the area) and he smashed into them seemingly at speed with little in the way of stopping.

Looking at the car it seems from my obvious couch inspection vantage point that he was probably giving it horns a bit and didn't see it coming in any way.

So more observation and lower speed could have made all the difference.

But like I say it's a couch perspective hindsight view.

I've been out of touch for the last while and hadn't realised that Fanus had switched to a faster bike.

He always did go full tilt at everything.

Sometimes I yearn to get back in the saddle and then these accidents remind me of why I sold my F800 a couple of years ago (had a narrow miss with the kuk drivers down here in the Cape).

If I'd known he'd upgraded to a faster bike I'd have kept closer contact with him.

I posted in the other thread but will repeat it here. From the pic it looks like the car is standing on 6th street at the Glenhove crossing. Glenhove has right of way there so the assumption is that Fanie gave it the beans and the car crossed into his way. Your classic “driver didn’t see the bike that was going a bit too fast” accident.

But an armchair guess as previously stated, but nothing else really makes sense. That car looks like it took a very hard hit.

Such a shame though. One small mistake or moment of absent mindedness after years/months of doing it right and it ends up fatal. Very unfair.

Here in fourways the traffic is just too dangerous for my liking. I’ve given up riding altogether. It’s just not fun or safe in Joburg. You always feel like “this might be it” with these impatiant and ignorant ****ers on the road :(
