Tragic! I am having my first lesson this Saturday and I have been so excited I can barely sit still. Now I don't know...

Don't let it scare you. Unfortunately it happens, and people that ride bikes know and take the risks and still choose to hop onto two wheels as it is what they love. Just be safe and vigilant, that is about as much as we can do

Just be mindful that a lot of what went wrong was potentially within Fanie’s control or a lack there of on his part.

Keep that sensibility at the back of your mind that stuff doesn’t just happen to you and that you are equally accountable for it and then you’ll be fine.

This. Motorcycles are fabulous - both fun and practical but you must be fully aware of the inherent risk and approach it with that in mind.

Wear as much protection as you can afford and always ride with full awareness of what is going on around you.

Keep the high speeds for the track - and never assume that car drivers have seen you or even if they have, will act in the bikers best interest.

Ride safe.

PS I will post the names of two excellent books that are worth reading as you embark on this adventure

Did Fanie have kids?

Might be a bit silly, I didn't know him well but I'm feeling slightly reticent about riding a lot this summer after hearing the news of his passing.

His was not a spectacular accident, it's a fender bender in essence. Really hits home that such a small misstep could have these kinds of consequences.

My family would be utterly devastated. My dear wife... Jesus.

I'm not sure it's right for me to risk that on their behalf anymore.

Pretty sure he had kids. I can speak on this as well though, with kids of roughly 2 and 4 years old. At the end of the day, as with literally everything else in motorcycling, its a trade off. Personally I did not cope well with rush hour traffic, so my quality of life is vastly improved, meaning that when I do get home I'm in a much better mood to interact with the kids and I get there much sooner. Of course, the trade off is the risk of injury on the way home. These things will be something that only you and your family can figure out and the benefits you see will also be different making the equation vastly different from person to person.

Is that supposed to be brand new? Because surely a second hand one doesn't cost that much?

The RC is still ugly as sin, not even CF can save it from that.

Read a stat that at least 11 bikers get killed every week in JHB alone. Glad I never bought mine. Traffic here is just a stuff up.

I get where you are coming from, but they also need to allow you to do the things you love.

Your contribution to that pact is not to increase your risk by riding like a ****.

And to have life insurance in place should it all go horribly wrong so that they have a better life for it without you.

Like @Archer says though the better mood I find myself in and the fact that I have more time with them because I ride bikes is a massive offset to the risk involved.

Also the last thing my wife would want is for me to be a sad potato because I've chosen not to ride bikes in favour of a false sense of security in favour of the kids.

We have to die from something. Rather do something you love than not live a life just in case, only to be hit by a bus or have a heart attack anyway.

People die in cars too and ultimately it's up to you to make your chances of dying on a motorcycle significantly lower.

It sucks to say it in the face of someone's death, but I don't believe for a moment that Fanie wasn't ultimately responsible for his own demise and that it all happened beyond his control.

So if you are riding like a twat and putting yourself in unnecessary danger then you either need to sort out that self discipline or not ride at all.

Second hand. They’re quite the collectors items these days. Especially the 250.

Didn't realise.

They were never really cheap to begin with and I guess with the 2-stroke factor going out of fashion they would get some cult following.

However for the money I would just buy a Mille instead. Or a Dorsoduro even.

Still love my RD 350LC2 that I had back in the day. Was bored out to 384CC and full Yoshi kit on. That thing was a blast.

And hundreds die in cars but for some reason people keep on trucking using those every day because it's the normal thing to do.

That's a total of 259 per week on average. 11 being on bikes is a mere 4%.

Am not against bikes at all, enjoy them if that's your thing but if you are going to use and enjoy them, acknowledgement and management of the greater risks involved should be a key - simply saying that people die in cars too helps no one. You have to realise that bikes are more inherently dangerous than cars, not to say that you cannot manage the risks and reduce the danger but that anyone approaching riding bikes regularly needs to face up to all the potential risks and dangers so they can mitigate/manage them.

Perhaps you should read some of Sauron's previous posts.

Again, am not a regular here, Fanie's death made me interested in the back story of his bike and I certainly don't know Sauron's general outlook on bikes.. That doesn't change the fact that pointing out to someone who made a rational(in his mind) choice not to take a risk on a bike is somehow wrong because "people die in cars too" is a silly thing to say.

Fair enough he makes very valid points - but saying that more people die in cars than on motorcycles is fudging the point of the increased risk because so many more people drive cars than do motorbikes...

https://auto.howstuffworks.com/are-motorcycles-more-dangerous-than-cars.htm

"Even so, compared with people driving cars, motorcycle drivers face a much higher risk of dying in a crash: U.S. government data from 2013 show that for every mile traveled that year, the number of motorcycle-related deaths was 26 times the number of car-related deaths [source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety], with a total of 4,381 motorcycle fatalities. "

Really don't want to start the usual motorcycle v car argument here. It's a personal choice. I'm rethinking mine, can't help it looking at those pics, thinking of my girls... I'm sure that Fanie would have appreciated a moment of introspection in the wake of this news - he seemed like a thoughtful person.
