So, I was driving on a 100 Km/h road he other day, going around 130 Km/h (traffic in the fast lane is typically ~120 Km/h on that particular stretch), and I was passed by a dude on a bike going, it must have been at least, 170/180 or so...

As a new rider, I'm curious about the general thoughts on speed limits, etc... It's such a temptation to go a bit faster than you should, and somehow it seems like a lesser violation of the law on the bike, as compared to a car, although it's obviously the same thing in practice.

Thoughts?

He is a chop, especially if he passed close by you in the same lane.

On a properly open road I apply the Speed Limit + 25% maximum so as not to get arrested. So that's 150 in a 120 on a very open road.

In traffic while lane splitting you want to do 15-30km/h faster than the cars around you. It's hard to gauge this but I feel if you can't read their numperplates you are going too fast.

Lane splitting I refer to cars standing dead still or crawling and chock and block.

If cars are moving freely at the speed limit I don't recommend lane splitting, especially not on a small bike, and doing full lane changes through gaps instead.

You must make yourself as visible as possible so at higher speeds a bit of a weave so a car clearly know you are there is a good idea before overtaking.

I might be getting my bike this weekend. The stock fender on the CBR250 is a massive eyesore.

Also need to paint the rims black. Can I plasti dip this myself? How do I take off the tyres? Or should I get a shop to do this?

Very nice Mike7, please send pics when you do.

You buying privately or through a dealer?

Crash bars next .

That's a lot of money for a small change.

One that gives even less weather protection.

I just don't get it.

It actually looks better from the back , I am a weekend warrior now days , so it is not for commuting ( i do not work any more ) .

The old tail was like a parachute it was so big , the new one uses the original stop lights and indicators .
Hated the old tail .

What are you guys paying for insurance? I got a quote from my insurance for R217 for a CBR250.

Keep to the speed limit. This is the only proper answer ...but I know what you are actually asking and the answer is just as simple: it's up to you, please don't be a dick.

There are other people using the road (to get somewhere not for jollies) and they would like to get to where they are going alive and without incident. There are small kids and babies in those cars.
Then there are the people at home who love you and want to see you in one piece.
Please, don't be a dick.

This is a good one that I haven't seen mentioned on this thread yet. Read about "motion camouflage" and "SMIDSY" for more on this.

Just ordered a pair of no noise ear plugs. I have an aftermarket exhaust on my cbr250r and its really loud. My ears hurt like hell after every ride.

Anyone else use ear plugs?

Also bought a cheap sjcam sj4000 action cam to attach to my helmet.

It's not the exhaust hurting your ears, it's the wind noise.

And yes every person on a motorcycle that ever touches a highway should be using Ear Plugs.

No Noise is very good, just be mindful NOT to use the keyring thing on the bike's keys as it unscrews easily. Put it on your house keys instead.

Builder's sells a similar design silicon ear plug that doesn't have the ceramic and I use that instead since I lost one of my No Noise.

If you think your bike is loud...you haven't heard mine.

Amount of fingers depends very much on the bike and brakes. My bike has a relatively long pull from minimum to maximum braking force. That plus the design of the handle means that if I pull with just one finger I end up squashing the other fingers if I really need to pull hard, which is bad. Friends sport bike has super-short take on the lever and 1 finger works fine.

If you can get maximum brake application quickly while still having a good grip on the bars, then that is the right number of fingers for you.

As for the ear-lugs, I second what you said. It's the wind-noise not the exhaust that will wreck your ears. I used to have a custom-made set of moulded, hard plastic ear plugs. Worked fantastically, until I left them in the boot of a rental car.

Now I just buy a pack of disposable plugs every now and then from builders warehouse. Think it's something like R25 for a pack of 10.

Always two fingers on the road. I tend to rely on my ABS these days, although I've never engaged it on the front wheel (except for one piece of oil) so perhaps I do still roll on like I did in the beginning just a bit faster. Perhaps it's time to take the long way home again and try this

Yep, I use No Noise ear plugs. I ride the Somerset West - CT commute for work sometimes on N2. Had to get them, wind noise was terrible. I have a Yoshi pipe...so I still hear that awesome sound with minimal wind noise. Sometimes when I fill up near home, will take out the ear plugs to really hear the bike. :D I dont know how people ride at +80km/h without ear plugs...

I was thinking the other day that I should ask the new guys here about braking and if they are using two fingers or more.

Then this just popped into my news feed and is well worth a read even for veterans.

Most new guys also don't squeeze the brakes and use them like an On/Off switch instead.

I use 2 fingers for brake and 4 over clutch. Tried using 2 fingers on clutch...but just feels "odd", cant seem to shake the 4 fingers on the clutch lever...

so a few months ago i sold my 01 wr250f, and upon riding my friends cbr 125 i got bike fever and now want a bike again.

My original plan was a Mt07. but its a bit out of budget and also i'm worried of getting an expensive bike for a first time onroad rider.

Now i want an offroad preferably a 250. but i need it road legal too since i want to ride it onroad for and and get some XP while i'm at it for later when i can get a proper road bike.

any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated..

XT250

Myself, I got "bike fever" again but haven't ridden in 12 years (only have A1 currently). Thinking of getting an XR125L for town driving/mucking about and if it sticks I'll go do my learners again and look at something bigger.

Need to do a refresher course so I don't crash it first time.

If you can already ride the road is going to be the road regardless of the bike.

But good middle ground would be the KTM390.

MT07 is fine though. MT09 would have been a different story.
