Sorry no, he's not a hero.
What a muppet! Going way too fast in that wet weather in the first place, and with his girlfriend on the back! Idiot!

Don't get me wrong. Not advocating what he's doing pre-crash. I agree with you 100%. WAY too fast for the conditions. My awe is reserved to the post dump activities...

Saw this over the weekend... EPIC. This guys presence of mind during something this scary to try grab his SO is awe inspiring.

Yeah, idiot for driving that fast in the rain, even worse doing it with a passenger. But then hindsight is 20/20 and accidents happen.

Having the presence of mind to pull her closer during a crash, that is very cool.

Yip, great presence of mind.
But should have avoided that in the 1st place.

My guesstimate going by how how fast he goes past the white lines puts him at 75km/h maximum, likely closer to 60km/h. Doesn't seem excessive for the highway (depending where in their life your tyres are)

Really? Did you see the puddles of water?
Why do you think he aqua-planed?

Let's try again, is 60km/h too fast on the highway? And yes I saw the puddles to the left, the ones he made sure to avoid. Seems though as if the highway was poorly constructed - he goes down after crossing a diagonal mini stream while leaned over to make the bend. Whether he was going 30 or 180 he was going down in that case.

I think I miscalculated the speed on this particular video though, closer to 90km/h (assuming 6m spacing between lines). Without witnessing it for myself, I can't say if that is too fast. I've quite happily done 100 on the highway in CT downpours, but then of course there is rarely standing water of any kind on the highway. Closer to home I'll do between 10-30 in some parts where the water gets 10cm and deeper

So a question for the more experienced riders out there. Seeing as the rainy season I'd approaching, any advice for us newer riders?

1. First rains after a dry spell raise the diesel and oil from the road surface. Pay EXTRA attention to corner entry speed. Be in the right gear for the corner BEFORE the corner. Watch the throttle on the exit. Roll on slow.
2. During rain - If your speed feels "safe" reduce it by another 5%.

Just heard back from Smart people working on my bike. rectifier is busted, so not enough current being sent to the bike while the engine is running, so the battery keeps dying, and this has now cost me two batteries in the lats 6 months.

no one in SA has a rectifier for my 1997 Virago. my options are hope to find one at Bike Hospital or find a way to get one in from outside the country....

Already looking at what my next bike could be. I'm absolutely in love with the R6. Would it be to soon if I get one by the end of the year or early next year? I have a 250 which I've been riding for the past month.

Mike, that's completely up to you as a rider. If you feel confident enough on the road, and feel you're mentally prepared to handle a 600, then by all means go for it. Sooner than end of the year should be fine. I myself am planning my upgrade to a CBR600, as son as I can get finance. Maybe even higher, who knows....

Hey Everyone

Im pretty sold on a Verysys 650 ( Old Spec 2014 ) But new. They have them on special at Suzuki South.
Anyways, Ive riddena few bikes the last three weeks BMW, Triumph Honda etc. I would have gone for the 800 GS Adventure but its just too wide. Its a beast in traffic ( Well for me anyways )

I come from a Motocross background and changed over to super bikes. I sold my last firebalde about a year ago and have been bikeless since. I have recently moved and the traffic is ridiculous. Takes me close to an hour and twenty minutes to get to work.

Anyways, out of the bikes I drove the Versys just sort of seemed to be happy. It can do a bit of touring but is also quite happy in the traffic at low speeds. I saw a few guys mention the ER6, they are also nice but I wanted somerhing that I could take on a dirt road and not worry too much.

Its good to be back on a bike though. I've missed it.
