Oh Wow, I thought the suspension was one of its weak points.
Well I bought one anyways. I think as a commuter its going to be perfect. Also a little weekend get away with the SO etc everynow and again :)

How are the Dual Helmets? I have a full face helmet for super bikes but t seems that with not being out the wind as you are on a superbike at high speed, its very noisy ( Wind Noise ) Worth looking into or best just staying with a proper full face helmet?

A laaitjie learned a valuable lesson yesterday - don't pass cars on the left if it is a single lane, ie in the emergency lane.

I was slowly making my way up the queue and I spot this guy on the left. I wondered to myself if I would catch up to him, and if so what I would say to him(if anything). We carry on a few more seconds and a car in front makes way for me, completely cutting off the other guy who promptly mounts the curb and falls off. Lucky for him no contact with the car and only a small scrape on his knee, so after checking he is ok and giving the bike a once over I asked him to rather pass on the right since most car drivers won't be looking for him on the left. Sometimes takes a bit longer but it is generally safer. Hopefully it stuck. Car driver was a hell of a nice guy too, just wanted to know the youngster was ok.

That really irritates me when I see people riding in the emergency lane. Not only dangerous to them but to me as well. Cars close that splitting lane very quick and its a toss up who they see first me or him. Makes for a very unpleasant commute.

I desperately need an F800GS. Its become something of a requirement for my survival. I love their sound, character, and BMWness. However, I want to ask the opinion of a forumite who may have possibly ridden one offroad. How is it on the gravel? Any opinions out there?

ALSO on an unrelated note, MyBB breakfast run anybody? Im keen to take my steed on a twisty adventure around cape town.

I'm always keen, but can't this weekend, sitting in Nigeria. Miss meh bike :(

Down franshoek pass or something similar it could be done. The lighter more agile bike coupled with a better rider and it should be easy. On the straights you will be left for dead.

It's not 2004 any more.

The superbikes are as lightweight now if not more so.

Even then a 600 would rape it more than 1000 by that logic and a 750 woukd rape them all.

If you were arguing a 899 Panigale versus a 1299 sure.

But this is an ER6 versus a Panigale...It's no competition in the hands of the same rider.

I drove the Adventure on gravel and its very very capable. I think the 800GS would have similar handling characteristics.
They are fantastic bikes and I really dont think you could go wrong.

Stick to full face, it's always safer.

Helmets are noisy you should be wearing earplugs. The racier(lighter in weight) they are the worse they are.

My Shoei GT Air is as quiet as they come and I still use earplugs.

Define offroad.

It's just fine for gravel and even compacted sand and such.

But you aren't going to climb mountains with it or do Enduro.

Not my opinion, just from my mates who have them.

You're completely correct. But bikes have such a steep learning curve, it's very possible for the battle hardened racer on his er 6f to fly passed the dentist on his S1000rr. It's all relative at the end of the day. But the new rung of superbikes are easier and faster than ever, as you said, and so you would have you work cut out for you indeed.

How does it compare to a 990 adventure. I heard the 800's suffer from too little weight on the front wheels and don't offer much feel on loose surface?

Yeah look pro rider on ER6 vs beginner on a pricey superbike (often with no gear on) is going to change the whole game.

But bike vs bike, say on a track with a lap timer the ER6 isn't in the same league.

You would find that a 600 or 750 might klap a 1000 on some tracks like you said.

But these days the 1000's are super light and that's why they are way pricier as well.

But my "little" Street Triple often holds up or is out front of the bigger badder Speed Triple because it's a bit of a fatty.

Before I bought my Triumph XC, I rode the F800GS. I also tried the Yamaha Tenere (XT660Z and 1200). The KTM990. Hand on heart the Triumph was the best for me. Don't get me wrong - all the others were amazing bikes. Each with their own merit. And if i COULD have bought two bikes that day... I'd have bought the KTM as well. BMW owners (like Triumph owners) will uphold their views of their machines. And while they all have their pro's and con's... Absolutely no dual purpose machine I rode had the soul of the Triumph. I was objective when I rode all the bikes and picked the one I loved. Not the one I could afford. Almost 20 000km later - she has not missed one beat. Ive put her through extreme offroad and some fairly complicated onroad routines. My background is enduro and MX riding. She excels on the dirt as much as on the tar. Ive dumped her in the rocks. Ive dumped her on the gravel. All my offs were due to rider error as she was and is always able to surpass my bravery and skills. Repair and running costs are very fair. Do yourself a favor and try one before you settle on anything else. If a XC isn't for you... Fair enough. But do at least try one.

Only 20000km eh? Wait another 14000km and it should explode. :)

I rode the XC and GS recently and I think the Triple won't be quite as easy to manage offroad as the engine needs more revs. But like you say it has way more character.

The GS motor is boring in comparison. In the 800 anyway.

Definitely try both thoufb.

Check on samotorcyclist.wordpress.com I wrote a but about them back to back.

Like I said not my opinion just hearsay.

Haven't ridden the 990 so can't compare.

The wee bits of gravel I've done with them don't justify an opinion.

Thanks man, I do have ear plugs yes but I just wondered if the Duals were maybe a little quieter? I have never ridden with one. I tried my MX helmet once but that was awful, the wind catches the peak and rips your head around.I have a Shark Race - R Pro and its not that quiet above say 110.

Thanks Bud

Yup had a Shark before and returned it for being noisy.

What do you mean Dual? Flip face or Dualsport?

Full face in my opinion is always going to be quieter with the quietest being the touring types.

Quick question, I'm looking at some brands of bikes, and I'm reading that suzuki doesn't have the best build quality, whereas Honda is the king for build quality... Any of you guys have experience with suzuki, especially the gsxr series?
