Sitting at 18k on my Pilot Road 4 set now which includes a track day.

Hoping to push to 20k for service time and do it all at once but it's going to be touch and go.

You lucky my Michelin Pilot Power 2CT are done at 10 K back, front is ok .
No burn outs just spirited riding .

Last rear tyre was gone before 5000 Km. Front was still OKish, but replaced both.
No burnouts, ever, no locking up of tyres - but thru to the canvass before 5000km. Went for a harder compound tyre this time around.

Too much torque :)

Oh and won't know how long these ones will last because I'm trying to trade-in my bike, just as soon as my work allows me to be back in CT long enough to get it sorted.

Too little time, too many bikes to test.

Don't suppose you slapped a Go-Pro on when you went tracking?

Only thing I do is run them a bit higher than recommended (about 0.3 bar higher) on tar - 2.7 / 3.0 front/back. But I'm quite lazy with that even, will only reinflate if one has dropped to 'normal' levels

Same tyres...

Road tyres? Cause that's high even by road standards and I'm sure you were running dual sport ones?

50/50 duals :D

Well then it could very well be the high pressures.

But I have no idea what they are meant to be running at.

I do seem to recall the dual sport stuff is much lower and if my road values are recommended 2.6/2.9 then yours are very high.

Max pressures are 2.9 / 2.9 according to manufacturer. According to the owners manual I'm basically running pressures for two up and/or load

Tyre Pressure is very much a personal preference, but keep within range of the the manufacturer spec. I Have used Anakee 3's, Heidenhau K60's & TKC 70's (on my 2015 GSA);

Anakee 3 is a 20/80 in my opinion (suppused to be 30/70 I think)
Heidenhau K60 is 50/50
TKC 70 is 30/70

For tar I keep my front between 2.2 & 2.5 bar, and rear between 2.5 & 2.9 bar. I really dont feel much difference in those ranges. For extended gravel travelling, I would typically run 1.5 to 1.8 on the front and 2 to 2.2 on the rear... I migt be inclined to go lower for thick sand ... (try avoid sand altogether - that shyte be scary :D)

KTM 1290 Adventure R is SA's Pirelli Bike of the Year

KTM's 1290 Adventure R is this year's Pirelli South African Bike of the Year.

A panel of judges voted for the Austrian-built adventure motorcycle ahead of 14 other motorcycles that were selected as finalists for the 2017 competition.

This makes KTM the first two-time winner of the competition, with the 1290 Super Duke R having won the 2014 title. The five-year old contest is run by Mat Durrans and Harry Fisher of The Bike Show.

The 15 finalists were all tested in Gauteng this past Friday and Saturday by journalists from various motorcycle publications around the country, including this writer. The bikes were evaluated on public roads, as well as the Gerotek test circuit near Pretoria where their handling abilities were put to the test.

The versatile 1290 Adventure R is the flagship model of KTM's dual-purpose range of motorcycles, built for road and offroad. With its powerful twin-cylinder 1301cc engine, which makes outputs of 118kW and 140Nm, it's capable of hanging with most sports bikes on the road while its comfortable seating position ensures laid-back long-distance touring. When the tar ends, its generous ground clearance, long suspension travel and wire-spoked wheels make it a machine equally capable of playing in the dirt.

The R217 000 price tag comes with advanced electronics. Dynamic safety features include lean-sensitive ABS brakes, tyre-pressure monitoring, and lean-sensitive traction control that can be set to four different modes: Sport, Street, Rain and Offroad - ensuring optimum grip for the prevailing riding conditions. Cruise control, a slipper clutch, an LED headlight with integrated cornering light, adjustable windshield, remote key system, and luggage racks complete a formidable specification package.

The 1290 Adventure R also sets the new standard in rider interfaces with its large and vivid 16.5cm TFT display, which automatically adjusts its brightness to ambient light.

A cellphone compartment with an integrated USB socket keeps your phone charged, and the optional incoming calls and audio function links the phone to the bike via Bluetooth.

The other finalists in the 2017 Pirelli SA Bike of the Year competition were:

BMW G310R

BMW GS 1200 Rallye

Ducati Multistrada 950

Ducati Supersport

Honda Fireblade SP

Indian Scout 60

Kawasaki Z900

Kawasaki Z1000SX

Kawasaki Versys 300

KTM 1090 Adventure R

Suzuki GSX-R1000

Suzuki SV 650

Triumph Street Scrambler

Yamaha R6

It's too bad they don't factor the full dealership and reliability experience into the BOTY.

Because even as a winner I still wouldn't touch a KTM. Especially not in Cape Town.

I've had most awesome experience with the KTM dealerships in gauteng. Heard lots of bad stuff with the Cape town dealership.

Spoilt for choice here on KTM in Durban we have 2 .
Never owned a bike quite like my 690 Duke , the handling is awesome .
Never had a problem here either .

Just to vent a bit

I was lane splitting down republic road today. Doing 30 or so. Taxi decides to suddenly change lanes. Wipes me out. My beloved daytona 675 is in pieces. My hip and elbow bruised but luckily had all my gear on.

Cop car drives past the scene. I try wave them down. What do they do? Make eye contact with me and keep going. F u taxi and f u saps

Bike is a write off

Bleak :/ At least you're in one piece. I would report those cops if you had gotten the licence plate number

I've stopped riding republic in the morning precisely because of these taxi kunts. Glad you're ok
