Aah the KLR.
I got to ride mine on Monday. I finally completed the rebuild that I started in June. Still needs a few odds and ends...a good service, new footpegs and some go-juice.
I forgot how damn heavy and tall they are. I'm 1.75m and I tiptoe everywhere. The torque isn't explosive but it gets up to cruising speed pretty fast. It also doesn't want to lift the front wheel without a lot of persuasion

Picking up one of these tomorrow morning. Decided to upgrade.

Did you test ride the XR or any of the others at all?
I assume it comes with both the Dynamic and Performance package out of the box in typical SA fashion?

Yes, both packages. All the fancy electronics, up and down shifter, semi-automatic suspension, heated grips....forget the rest.
Did not bother riding any other BMWs, since none of them, except for the RR, had a better engine than my B King.
Will be odd getting used to having 'no' torque at low revs again. I will miss the 1340cc grunt of the suzuki.
...but only until the powah kicks in

On a serious note not everyone needs to or does crash. Which is why I advocate going for training BEFORE buying a bike.
Don’t learn by doing (failing).
That being said I’ve had three proper crashes (as in gone to hospital) and a few mishaps and I still have all my parts.
I don’t personally know anyone who has died on a bike, compared to the number of people I know who have died from other ailments that are completely unrelated.
Statistically you’ll crash in the first six months of riding and then again in your second year when becoming complacent and thinking you know what you are doing.
I’ve gone 60,000km now without incident, by and large because I’ve grown up and accepted responsibly for my riding instead of blaming everyone else.
Going back in time I can say that all my accidents were preventable if I rode then how I do now.

Clutch was very light. I'm used to needing almost no throttle at all on the B King. I cokd pull off in 1st and 2nd with no throttle at all.
Stalled the RR at the first robot
Test rode it in heavy traffic everywhere. When heading back to the dealership I was not happy. It was starting to get uncomfortable, and it seemed pointless. It was fine riding in stop/start traffic, but I was thinking it was a waste. Rather take the S1000R for a ride.
And then I got to open it open for a tiny stretch.
Those 10 seconds convinced me I needed this bike.

That's what I "did". Dropped her in front of my gate when my foot slipped when I stopped.
Broke mirror and scratched fairing. Much more careful now. Haven't had any close calls for a while. Though I am in my second year of riding now

Yeah when it goes it goes well.
The 1** km/h I did down Sea Point main road told me that it wants to do 100% all the time which is why I didn't fancy it.
90+% of the time I will be puttering along. That would be the case regardless of the bike.
It's that 5% of 'enthusiastic' driving that makes the difference. I wanted something that would put a smile on my face.
I'm lucky enough to have a company car, which is comfortable and sensible. But smile inducing it is not. Taking the long way home every now and again is fun.
If it doesn't work I sell it a few months time.
