Thanks for the reminder - need to get some pricing on a front tyre for my bike. Usually deal with Bike Tyre Warehouse in Midrand

Pricing was very similar to bikerswarehouse in North riding, but BW is a lot closer, and I needed way to transport the old tyres. So, go there with bike and come back with car, midrand was a bit far away :)
 
I have 150xxxkm on Pre-Sling. Damn thing refuses to die.

Speaking of which, does anyone here daily a Harley Sportster? I am actually having a look at a Second hand 1200 with is going for a fairly reasonable price which I would like to daily.

The bike is an older model, 2009 was it's date of register. It does have a couple mods, none engine related all aesthetic related modifications. Full service history(not with HD, but a somewhat reputable custom shop in Cape Town).

Would anyone suggest riding a Harley as a daily?

Having rode a Buell for many years which uses a Sportster motor they are highly reliable so no issues there.

However riding a Harley in traffic (which I've also done many times) is really not ideal for a few reason...

1. They sit too bloody low. As low or even lower than a car so you don't have any advantage in seeing what's happening ahead and is a borderline safety risk.

2. They are ****ing heavy to operate and therefore aren't very nimble to get around and more so not very quick to stop.

Obviously this applies to pretty much any cruiser not just Harleys.

It can be done, but certainly not my first choice.

If I was opting for that kind of thing it would be a BMW RnineT or Ducati XDiavel so I still have the sporty side of things to keep me safe.

Firstly, the second hand for the RnineT is a bit small - and for a retro-esque bike that is customizable, it is rather bland and the options available are pretty expensive. I was actually looking at a big GS, but I do not agree with the price at the moment. So a cruiser type moto is what I have settled on.

Nothing wrong with that, just illustrating the pitfalls.

Not many RnineT's just yet. Sportsters you have decades of them and all look the same so lots of choice.

Why not the Street 750? Has ABS and a modern engine.

Mainly because they are plentiful, and I have always wanted a Sportster. I try not to buy anything that is too new, teething issues, and the possibility of a recall is something I do not want to be with. Of course, HD's are, for all intents and purposes - dead simple and reliable.

Rode a Street 750, but I never enjoyed the ride too much.
 
I thought the whole purpose of a motard was to get it to slide?
Did you race on asphalt only?

I am not on that level to back it out yet, still need to get there. I come from superbike racing so I race with a SBK style and not a MX style.
The tracks in SA in the motard scene is all asphalt. We race on short circuits
 
Do any of you okes know what the process is in our lovely land to make a off road bike road legal, ie if I wanted to take a old kx250 and turn it into a supermoto what would the legal process be?
 
First thing you should know then, is it's called backing it in, not out...

Not practical at all bud.
Mx bikes are not made to run "long" distances at constant revs. Gonna have to do an oil change every 3 days, and that is just going to be the start of your troubles

The stator, rectifier and battery will be too small to power the lights on the bike as well. There are upgraded stator kits available.

I am not sure if a plastic fuel tank would be legal too.

Increased wear on a motor that was designed to be run at full load/constant load may be difficult to maintain. If the bike is a 2 stroke it will be even worse.

At least you do not have to worry about emissions in this country.

I don't like the 750 as well. Length of the bike, size of the engine (for my weight). Rather the 1200 than the 883 (try not to get the 883 converted to 1200). You are in a good part of SA for secondhand Sportsters - a lot people buy Harleys and leave them at their holiday homes in CT, when they realise that they are not using them enough, they flog them very cheap.

Hmm, didn't think about that, but yeah was just interested as I see quite a few off roads for sale at decent prices, and I like the supermoto thing.

For racing it is great fun, but not for commuting or riding on the road. I actually wanted to buy a KTM 450 that was converted to a motard and made road worthy. If it does not start the first try with the electric start than you are screwed and have to try kick it, decided against it and just got a full racing supermoto. If you want a road worthy supermoto then rather buy one that is made for the road like an Aprilia SXV or a Husky 701 or something like that

What about a triumph thruxton 900? I know a good mate that is selling an immaculate example.
