What is your time frame and budget? You could look at a 790 duke or wait for the 790 Adventure :) The duke seems to be a blast. Or maybe the 701 Vitpilen? Nobody said commuting needs to be boring..
It's more of an investigation at this point depending on where I end up living. But I'm supposed to find a place to stay by December the latest so not the longest timeline.
Budget is around €8k for whatever that's worth. Basically a ±3 year old BMW F800, unless I abuse the 3.3% interest rate offered by BMW finance over here but I'm not really keen on anything with a balloon

Ah. I'd forgotten you've moved. Where about did you move to?
Seems motorcycles are expensive that side, which makes me sad - also aiming at Europe.

I'd take a F800GS then, but I'm biased :)
Or I'd look at an pre-loved KTM Duke 690R - and get all the electronic goodness that comes with it for those rainy roads. Or what about a street triple? Or tiger? Support should be better that side.

Not opposed against the Honda, just feels like you should get something European. Unless you're after insane economy in which case also check out the Versys 300X.

If you come here bring your bike with ;) I chose not to because I really don't need a huge adventure bike. I'm in the Netherlands btw.

Think a Triumph is not on the list, not a popular brand at all. I also like the 800GS but the ST apparently has a belt drive which I've read means less maintenance? It's like the next best thing after having owned a shaft drive

I saw that. I also follow MCRider and between these two there is very good advice. Some obvious, some not so. Either way good stuff.

I just wish that half the stuff F9 reviews was available in SA. Even if we get the brand he reviews, that product won't be available for like another year and half or something.

:crying:Failed my test yesterday. Still so bleak (36 hours later). Rolled back a few centimeters on the incline start. Regarding booking again, do I have to go through the whole procedure? Eye tests, new photos etc, or will they have all of that on file (as it were)?

Swak one ou.
Next time!

Yes, whole process again.

I rode a scooter from day one and still use right leg down.
But I practiced super hard on the Proper bike with the rear brake in prep for the K53 test.

I am looking around but how do I change the default ip range>192.168.8.1 to 192.168.0.1

do they actually check which leg one puts down when stopping?

I've always, and will always use my right leg - want my foot on the gear and right hand on the brake

When you pull off on the hill you should use the foot brake.
Also, just using the hand brake is risky as the rear wheel can move as the front forks compress and expand which will lead to a fail for rolling

So the parentals and I decided to and take the Triumph Tiger 800cc for a test ride this Saturday passed. Both my mom and dad are retiring within the next 6 months and they want something that they can take on a gravel road without sweating bullets. Apparently the GSX-R750 and Blackbird don't like gravel roads. Who knew...

Must say, I was mildly but pleasantly surprised by the Tiger- I'm not used to dual purpose/adventure bikes at all but I must say I liked it.
Also, it's a tall bike. I'm not the shortest, at 1.85~ish, and I couldn't comfortably put both feet flat on the ground. I expected that of a 1200 or such, not from the middle weight class.

Another thing I saw was the Kawaski Z900RS - I'm not one for older or in this case retro bikes... But I would buy that thing in a heartbeat based on looks alone. Much wow!

Didn't take any pics though- my bad :(
The new shape Versys and V-strom are under rated bikes for what they are. Versys for road and V-strom for off road.

No, they check if you roll back.

Which would be impossible without left foot down and right foot on the brake.

I think my major mistake was getting onto the hill still in second gear. So it meant I had to grab the front brake while I was trying to find first and in the process of transitioning from the front brake to the rear, I obviously let it roll. Won't make that mistake again. Now it's just about finding the motivation to go do it all again...

Kuilsriver Traffic Dept has their hill outside and I took a good 30 minutes to get it right, when no one was around.

Bellville's hill was scary high and had unlevel paving bricks.

I don’t remember if you are even required to shift to second through the test? Maybe the answer lies in only using 1st and going to higher gears only for the speed sections.

But at the same time it’s a learned and required behaviour to stop in 1st so something to also just get used to.

Well I did the test in Parow. So from where you set off towards the incline start to where it is, is about 100m or so. So I changed up, thinking it's the natural thing to do, instead of screaming along in 1st gear.

So I had an interesting lane splitting experience yesterday afternoon.

Slowly working my way through traffic I approached a Free State registered bakkie with two pitbull's in the back enclosed in sheep rails. One saw me and started barking at me. Worrying that if I split past, the dog might lunge at me I held off until I could do a proper overtake on the left lane side. When I finally overtook using the far side of the adjacent lane the dog actually lunged at it me from the back of the bakkie . I had to do a double take if to see if it didn't jump of the bakkie completely. Luckily it didn't but it had both front legs off the side when the sheep rails stopped its rear legs.

Jirre the amount of times I’ve almost crashed because of surprise dog barking or lunging are numerous.

It should be a legal requirement to have them enclosed properly.

Quick question.

How much is it to service/replace a HD Sportsters belt drive?
I have just given the bike its first service, with a minor carb tune up and I checked the condition of the points. All is 100%.

I would like to get as rough estimate on what the workshop rate would be? If anyone could give me the price on the belt, and associated parts that may need replacing along with the belt, that would be appreciated too.
