M5 just before the N1 on ramp Cape Town, looks like a couple guys went down. Didn't look too good.
A couple? Racing?

Damn. Strongs to them! I recently had a slip-n-slide event whilst hitting some diesel in the road on my GS, thank goodness I wasn't leaning too much and my MITAS quickly gripped after that patch...my heart leaped right through my poephol for sureLooked like a BMW 1200 with 2 people on the bike. There were a couple other bikers helping, not sure if they were involved. I didn't see a car involved... So... yeah. Not sure what happened.
BMW replaced both the sprockets and chain for around R4000.Mine was checked in November and I was looking at mine recently and thinking replacement is in order.
Weather isn't great in CPT today. Possible they may have hit some standing water or water mixed with a bit of oil. Hope they're ok.
How often should I expect my rear brake pads to last? Mainly used in commuting, so on the brakes both front and back quite a bit.
It was "replaced"when I got the bike and now, a mere 9200km later its down to metal... I didn't even inspect it as I expected it to last much longer.

I'm a heavy user of the rear brakes and replaced mine at 32,000km.
Granted that's the OEM BMW Brembo jobs that do last longer than most.
On my Triumph I vaguely recall it was around 24,000km.
Sounds to me like you might be dragging your rear brake constantly, or they were never actually replaced.
How do you know they are on the metal? Did you in fact check them yourself?

Elaborate?
It seems like the rear pads can go quickly on some bikes when used to come to a complete stop or lazy balancing.
Mine lasted only 10'000km.
So I changed habbits and use the front to a stop now.
Front pads last much longer for me, and the rear pads are going >25'000km.
seems very high compared to my experience, i might have a fair bit of harsh braking but i wouldnt say more than most.
