I've been on and off bikes since I was quite young - maybe 8 or 9? So it's always been something special for me. I'm 28 now.

When I moved to PE I didn't have space for my KLR, and as I needed a car for my job I had to leave the bike behind at my folks' place. Many years have passed since then and the bike was deteriorating by just standing and not being ridden. I then decided to take it apart and rebuild it from the ground up, tackling and rust or corrosion that I found as I was doing it. When I finished it eventually, it was time for me to buy a house so I sold it to fund the purchase. Our current place only has one garage, but when we move in 3 or 4 years time I'll maybe look at getting a bike again.

For now, I just like to appreciate talking about and discussing them and I still enjoy the concept of one even though I no longer have one. I guess the dream isn't dead just yet :)
I also have one garage, so I started renting another garage in my complex to store my car so I have place for the bike. My wife's car always parked outside anyway, so that stays as is.

Ahh so much work on the klr only to sell it, but i know first hand how it feels to let go of something you rebuilt from the ground up. I'm sure you will get back on two wheels soon.

You could technically do your yard test on a Honda Grom, too. The 762mm seat height will be a dream for a shorty like myself :p

Just the thought of doing a yard test on my old KLR650 gives me the shivers, especially with the lackluster brakes that it had.

I miss my grom so much :(

Can anyone perhaps recommend a good motorcycle mechanic in Stellenbosch or Cape Town's Northern Suburbs?

My Honda NC750DCT is due for a major service. Honda Tygervalley quoted me R3800 for the service, which I suppose isn't too bad.

Thanks in advance.

thankfully i do my stuff myself now :D (well unless it is serious)

what is a "major" service to them? oil change and plugs? even when they are meant to change break fluid or something it doesnt happen.

Valves.

Also don’t assume it doesn’t happen.

My brake fluid is changed at every single service. Not even just major ones.

You get good dealers and bad ones. Just like you get good privates and bad ones.

Quite honestly, go to Honda.

That is a fair price and their work is good and reliable at that branch.

So, I had a prang yesterday - nothing serious, but like a moron, with the adrenaline and surprise, I dropped my helmet from the handlebars to the tarmac - it did a bounce and roll.

Get a new one? Or is this one still fine? It shows no external damage.

I have it insured, and they have advised me to go to a biker shop and get their opinion and replacement quote, but what say the experts on MyBB? So I know whether I should believe the shop if they say it's fine.

you should probably change it... that said i have dropped a helmet and kept using it.

if you are claiming anyway then you might as well.

do you honestly think they check the valve clearances?

Personally I would probably just keep carrying on with it and apply the five year rule as per normal.

Insurance will probably want to see it x-rayed before they pay etc.

In a perfect following the book style it’s replace without question.

Yes I honestly believe they do as I get the exact measurements from them after the fact and any shims used etc if required.

And no, it’s never a case of all valves needing shims and being billed excessively.

There is no other damage and this will be the only thing claimed for. I explained the whole story to them, and they've kinda gone with - if the shop says its broken, that's enough for us.

I wonder if the xrays might end up costing more than the replacement. It's not top of the range. I estimate replacement at around R4k.

Best practice dictates replacement - then that's what I'll try push for.
