Name and Shame: Unauthorised Debit Orders Thread

I just called UPS (Umvuzo Payment Solutions). It seems they are a third party debiting on behalf of NConnect (Nathi Connect). The telephone number for this dubious business is 031 301 0640. The email is [email protected].

I am still working to identify the actual people responsible for this entity so they can be exposed.

I encourage anyone who has fallen victim to this scam to email Pasa at [email protected]. Also welcome to mail me at Julius at Moneyweb dot coza.

I'm guessing to avoid erroneously debiting the wrong account. When you load your mag tape instructions for the bank it's not just account numbers and amounts. Maybe somebody working for a bank can give us more details.

There are too many variations on how people write their names, that's why you can use any name you want when your EFT someone.

There is a https://www.nconnect.co.za/, but workplace blocks it as a Malicious Website, seems about right.

EFT yes but I'm talking about loading debit orders at a bank from a company doing 100's of instructions loading these on a magtape to execute.

Still don't need the name... just the account number

Yes, but the customers can write their name in whatever way on the debit order mandate paperwork or phone call, it's not a viable check to verfiy anything, they just use the account nrs I'm sure.

Seems like I was also hit by this. Standard Bank reversed it in a few minutes after I reported it, but apparently could not provide any details of the company that debited me

My family members and I who have Discovery and Telkom did not get this D/O, so most likely the leak is from elsewhere if it's not random.

If there is a leak, I would actually expect it to be from 3rd parties, possibly somewhere in the D/O chain, so you won't find a single public common entity....

Makes sense, wish banks were more strict when it came to authorising D/Os

There's no checking of mandates anywhere in the process. The entire debit order chain is based on the assumption that there is a valid mandate in place. Only when the client disputes the debit order that a copy of the mandate is it checked to see if its valid.

There's at least 4 parties involved in the debit order process. The company/individual requesting the debit order, the debit order service provider, the receiving bank and lastly the bank client.

The debit order service provider should be checking if their clients have valid mandates in place for all debit orders sent by them, especially if it's new debit orders.

Scary, can't believe the system existed this long before being abused like this.
