NeoConnect Lite prices emerge

Hmm... in the very small text at the bottom of the advert are the words: "Prices subject to ICASA approval"

Doesn't that just warm the cockles of your heart?

Lemme see if I can find out if it's kbps or kBps (which would be cool)

My guess is, Neotell is doing what makes business sense, they are not a charity or NGO

I know that but the offerings they are coming up with, have not met my expectations at ALL.

How about a voice only option, so I can see if I can ditch Telkom or not.

156 Kbps too slow
No Ethernet
Can't use internet and voice simultaneously

Maybe Telkom is not so bad!!!

Seems to be, and they have all the customers at the mo, so my closer package is paying dividends unlike the 1000 on-net minutes when no-one really is on Neotel yet.

156kbps is a wopping 2.785 times faster than dial-up. I really hope they got the advert wrong.

How is 158 not divisible by two though?

And kB are quite different to kb. Surely they would have made sure this much was right!

I actually am not too sure how this speed rating works. It's just usually, 64, 128, 192, 256, 384, 512.... So, 158 is a strange number. I remember that Telkom actually forced the 192 speed down, they actually had to purchase hardware that slows the speed down, idiots.

Maybe this "158" number was worked out by Neotel based on what margins they want to acchieve on a 2GB cap at R299.

We waited 6 years for this? WTH?!?! No thanks, Neotel need to do a whole lot better to get my business.

... try to see it from NeoTel's perspective.

It's impossible to currently offer 1-4MB/Unlimited/R500 pm because of SAT3 constraints IIRC. So this is something they can offer and something to get out there and increase presence.

People really need to stop saying stuff like "I'll only accept Unlimited bandwidth on a 4mb line for R200 pm including 1000 free calls". It's not financially viable and it's not going to happen unless magic fairies suddenly start transporting data.

I agree that the speed isn't optimal but it's faster than dial up and cheaper than I would pay for a 384k/Unlimited plan so I don't really mind.

Something they really do need to address is the 24 month contract period as that will drive a lot of people away.

For any interbus provider other than neotel its not realistic to expect those speeds and prices. Neotel through TATA/VSNL have direct access now to the sat-3 cable without having to rely on telkom to provide infrastructure as far as i know.... so why not offer products that are what we are all waiting for? Sadly i think a lot of companies that enter our market have to learn that ppl want and are desperately waiting for the big bang product (uncapped and decent speed at a not rip off price).... unfortunately its so easy to provide subpar products (internationally compared) to little needy africans and coin it all the way to the bank.

These are the offerings Neotel have come with? R599 for 10GB, I could live with, but a 24 month contract is out of the question. And what is with teh slow speed on the cheaper packages?

Sorry Neotel. I had my bags packed and was ready to jump the Telkom ship and join your crew. But that 24 month contract ****e is starting to look like a hole in your side. Your ship is leaking...fix it!

That is unfortunately true - I'm hoping like buggery that NeoTel isn't one of those companies and that there's some very good reason for the lack of speed. I think we can all agree that uncapped is a fantastic thing but that speed, contracts need to change no?

I checked with NeoTel and yes, the speed is accurate at 156kbps (not bytes). When I commented that it was very, very slow the guy acknowledged and said that it might change in the near future but that this was a very provisional indication of speed.

Perhaps we should be happy that they are honest with us ?

Telscum would try to sell the same thing to us as 512k

Who is the joker that keep coming up with these 2gb packages?

Maybe somebody who defected from telkom and keep suggesting them?

2gb is a joke.

uncapped 512kb @ R300 pm would have been the best thing to start off with (after having thought this thing over for a while now).

My point is more that anyone who was expecing NeoTel to come out with:

Unlimited up/down
4 mb/s
R150 pm (month to month)

was smoking crack. Africa != America. It is going to be a slow road to awesome broadband and although I want it as much as the next starved SAfrican, I am realistic about it.

An uncapped offering is a great first step. I hope to hell they increase the speed as their network takes more load and as they know they have capacity but I don't think it'll happen until Seacom is a realistic resource.

I have been reading through the comments and finally got to a realistic one.

Nicely said dude.

All computer related items work in power of two's as in 384 (256+128), 512(2^9), 4096(2^12).

158 = 128+16+8+4+2 = very weird (5 bits) compared to
160 = 128+32 (2 bits)

5bits vs 1/2bits is very strange.

yeah that is true wat system or why are they using such an odd IT number just does not seem right... is there anyone on the forums here from neotel?
