Neotel charges for data delivery overhead

Still unresolved here.

26 days since I first lodged a ticket, no call back.
7 days since I relodged it, still no feedback.

Well my suggestion is to lodge a consumer complain on HelloPeter. It's madness took them more than 2 months to come back to me and I am not impressed at all.

I've finally received my first invoice (November) since starting with Neotel in August. And they have charged me for 5760Mb on a 5000Mb account of which I know I used less than 4000Mb (I'll post exact amount when I get home today). This is completely ridiculous. I'm about to blow a fuse.

EDIT: I use DU meter to monitor my bandwidth

Same here mate. I never used my Neotel for like 2 weeks and when i did get my logs, I was amazed to see.

P.S I am happy in EUROPE :) --- Unlimited Broadband/3G/HSDPA at reasonable price ;)

Update on my situation

My DU meter shows 3.8Gigs used for November. I sent a screenshot of my log to Neotel after phoning them yesterday. I'm now waiting for them to get back to me.

After all this happened I found out that they hadn't taken the invoice amount of my account. They'd only taken the R499 for the bandwidth and an extra R5 odd for calls made. So I'm not entirely sure what is happening on their side. Perhaps in light of all the complaints they've received about this they are taking guestimates on usage and if its close to your cap they just take off the advertised fee.

this all just sounds a little fishy to me. Im waiting for NeoFlex to hit the stores and if they dont give a unlimited offer, I will have to go with Telkom *puke* 3G.

Neotel you need to sort out this problem. 6GB overhead is just madness. Even a brute force attack with a chinese dictionary wont cause that much overhead.

Ok, so I found out that Neotel only takes off payment at the end of the following month, so my November bill will be taken off at the end of December.

I've been trying to access my Neotel email from which I sent the graph to Neotel in hope that I have some response from them. Surprise surprise, it's been down since last week Wednesday after I sent the graph through. I phoned in (last week Thursday) and asked what was happening and they told me they are aware of the problem and that it should be sorted by the end of the day. It's still down. I'm really beginning to consider canceling my account.

I'm really getting worried about Neotel.... the more users are signing on the more complaint Im hearing about... 10 fold! Neotel better sort something out, before they become another iBust!

This is a serious problem. We're all having the same problem and Neotel just won't fix it. I just had a lengthy discussion with one of the customer consultants and I was told that I would receive a call explaining where all the bandwidth has been used.

This is unacceptable. They're basically telling me that their monitoring devices are doing their job properly. We really need to do something about this. Canceling our contracts isn't going to solve the problem. Neotel's just going to rob some other poor sod the same way they're robbing us.

I've been thinking about going to the media...possibly giving the story to Carte Blanche. I'm sure once poeple start hearing about this horrible overhead it'll slow their customer growth down and they'll be forced to do something. What else can we do? Give some suggestions.

yes Venom! kick 'em in the nutters :D . But in all fairness this is a very serious issue!

This is truly unacceptable.

1st they should notify us once we reach our cap limit and send out rough figure of how much bandwidth we've used and how much it is costing.

I am not back in South Africa, but once I am back.

I will have to follow up with Neotel, what happen.

my hood finally got neotel coverage.... but I'm seriously worried about this overhead charging that is going on. If you only get 3GB out of a 10GB account, then there is no use to move over to them. 7GB.... is simply ridiculous.

Please keep the rest of us informed to what is going on!

Hi guys.
I was filling in my contract details to submit tomorrow for my 5gig prime deal.
I am also very worried about this and definately cannot afford to exceed the monthy cap by 2 or 3 gigs.
Money is tight AND every last rand of my limited coffers is going into a wedding.
Taking into account that Neoconnect lite unlimited is slightly cheaper does anybody think it's a better deal?Dog slow speed and all?

I suggest that in order to prevent nasty surprises, go with the Lite Unlimited pacakage. It maybe slow but you know you are not going to pay for extra data...

Im not sure how NeoFlex is going to work, but I hear there is a month to month option... so Im hoping it will work on a prepaid basis. Just load data and go... BUT.... how much data you get out of your cap is another story all together.

Depending where you live, take a look at Telkom's 3G setup... not a bad option at all and it is some what cheaper than Vodacom and MTN and its double the speed!

You guys make a great point, but alas im an impatient bugger and will go the lite unlimited route.my voda3g is so inconsistant that anything would be an upgrade.just hope the slower neotel speeds are stable.

I am on the prime package so I do not know how you guys feel, but I had a similar experience with Neotel where I was charged for exceeding my free telephone minutes. I am in the fortunate position that I am not paying via debit order so I phoned them up and told them that I will not be paying the extra phone charges (local call charges) because they did not notify me of exceeding my limit and there is no way of verifying this online. I told them to go and speak to Vodacom to find out how an online system should work and once they sorted their problems out, they must let me know and I will gladly make use of the service to ensure that I do not exceed my free minutes. I put the whole conversation in writing and the next month I was credited with the amount. Could you not apply the same tactic - i.e. just pay your monthly subscription based on your bandwidth monitor?

mackape has a good idea there though.

As there is no current accessible Neotel monitoring bandwidth tool it is only fair that usage be calculated according to what a users bandwidth monitoring tool indicates.
Just take a screen shot when you reach your usage cap with date and time all visible of course you save and send via email, surely if there is no current Bandwidth Monitoring tool for users to follow they can take the time to verify the date and time with bandwidth used by viewing the Create date of the saved screenshot.

Also what is an issue here, when you are idle upload and download data transfer still takes place and is probably the reason why there are discrepancies with data usage.

Idle uploading and download can't amount to a lot, even windows doesn't put out huge updates.

Good Idea, but why should consumer now install junk to just monitor something a company is supposed to do? Couldn't I just easily put on and off at demand.

That kinda of breaks the idea of what DSL is suppose to be.... "Always ON" connection.

The amount of overhead that the guys are complaining about goes way and beyond Windows update. You would have to download the XP SP3 between 10 and 20 times in a single month to get close to that overhead.

Maybe Neotel is trying to force everybody to move onto the Prime product... that way they do make a lot more money.

Please guys.... keep us updated!

Update

I never got my issue solved so I upgraded.
The worst part is when I have a problem they never call me back but when I requested an upgrade 2 days ago, I got a call yesterday to say the upgrade is approved and was done today

Where is the Neotel Rep on this?!

In all honesty, I can not see the Rep commenting on this. Imagine the ramifications of committing publically to this . Neotel will have to admit that there is something wrong with their bandwidth monitor and refund everyone that has overpaid up to date – this ain’t gonna happen. I am not a lawyer, so if there are any lawyers around, please correct me if I am wrong, but Neotel have no leg to stand on here. The bottom line, Neotel have to "prove" that the customer used more than the allocated bandwidth. Neotel also needs to provide the customer with "reasonable" means to monitor their bandwidth usage - which is currently not the case. My suggestion - don't pay, put it in writing and let us know what happens…
