Neotel data more expensive than Telkom

Neotel will be charging 8c (VAT included) for out-of-bundle data. This is R81.92 per GByte.

One can easily get Telkom ADSL "out of bundle" at R70 per GB - it is called pay as you go.

Isn't Neotel's bandwidth unshaped?
 
So long story short, we've been waiting for like, ever for these guys and they show up and now they more expensive?
 
Only thing is; its not per GB, its per MB, and unshaped. It is all a let down though. Roll on seacom.
 
you bunch of dumb @55, complaining kids...
1 gb of Webafica unshaped data = 125 pm. its R 44 cheaper.
plus it wireless (so you can pick it up and go) and it comes with 10 GB of data.
seems that no matter what you will complain about someting.

its R120 per USHAPED gig neotel is giving it at R81.92

That is what it is at the moment, Neotel have mentioned in their website within the next coming month we would see various packages added to suit higher and lower end users.

I still think Neotel have come in very good considering in the long end of it Neotalians will score as their increased and bettered technology use within South Africa has been promised. Suppose at least it is a good thing you sign a 24 month contract with Neotel as if they do not keep up with their part of the bargain we are protected.

So basically their 10 Gig unshaped bandwidth allocation with 2.1Mb(2.4mb) anywhere you go connection offering isn't too bad hey even with the unwanted 1000 Neotel - Neotel free minutes and all the un-needed extras, we should be greatful, it is just a start in a series of more packages to suit us with more competitive rates and offering on the way. Finally we have competition and I think it is up to us to put positive pressure on Neotel to look after us, the consumer and in turn know that they will win our long awaited support :)

The differentiation between shaped and unshaped shouldn't even exist in the first place. Neotel is doing the right thing by offering unshaped, and should therefore be compared to Telkom/SAIX unshaped &|| 3G/HSDPA. Telkom is ripping you off by differentiating between the two and charging less for one.

If you say that unshaped isn't important, then you'll be motivating Neotel to provide a shaped offering and then we're back to square one. Eliminating this differentiation is one of the things we've been protesting against. The same goes for the differentiation between local and international. Internet should be internet, i.e. local and international combined, and equal treatment of all protocols.

Although the first consumer rates for data from Neotel is not the cheap bandwidth everybody hopes for, I think it is way too early to judge.
A few points:
  • Assuming it is unshaped, it is a little bit cheaper.
  • With all the infrastructure changes in the pipeline, I would be surprised if costs don't come down in the future. Before those changes you can't expect too much.
  • I think it is unfair to compare the NeoConnect Prime package to any Telkom ADSL product. First of all, it is a wireless service, not a wired service, so it should be more expensive than ADSL. Much rather compare it to Vodacom 10GB for over R2000 or the even more expensive out of bundle rates.

Certainly this is only the first of many products, and one I believe is more aimed at the wireless market than ADSL.

Finally someone who doesn't have his head stuck up his ass.

Everyone was expecting uncapped packages even though it will only be possible once seacom lands.

Sigh.

Some people just expect too much.

At the moment the shaping issue may seem unimportant to some - however in the future it's going to increasingly become an issue (your parents et al will certainly wonder what's going on when telkom shapes the crap outta their skype connection for example ). Personally I feel that shaping should be legislated against - especially when there are bitcaps in place - you're paying for the bandwidth - it should be up to you how you're going to burn it. We should be fighting for a neutral network - it shouldn't be up to the ISP which services get 'prioritised'.

For an "out of bundle rate" that is pretty good. Don't just compare to ADSL prepaid. Try iBurst R0.95/MB, Sentech R1.00/MB, Vodacom R1.00/MB, and MTN R1.20/MB.

Given the enforced fixed costs of ADSL (ADSL & Line rental), ADSL bandwidth charges HAVE to be cheaper.

Correct me if I am wrong, and I may be, but I think that port prioritisation is legislated against, its just no one has the money or the will to take Telkom to court about it.

Come to think of it you're completely right - had clean forgotten about that little point (since it doesn't seem to be enforced anyway )- where's ICASA then?

ICASA may have ruled against port shaping, but they said nothing about packet shaping. And since everybody uses packet shaping, ICASA's ruling is useless (as are they).
