Personally I find the focus on local bandwidth/traffic frustrating, this is essentially the only SA site I visit, I want to be able to access proper international sites like Youtube, not bastardised SA versions.

Why should we have to?
Just because we're 3rd world, doesn't mean that they have to dump some outdated handsets from the back of a forgotten Chinese warehouse.
Its only an ethernet port for Flip's sake!
They probably got the Russell Peter's treatment from the little Chinese salesman when buying those handsets: "Hey! Be a man! Do the right thing!"
I agree - that's why I've maintained I'll be waiting on JHB and PTA to be the Guinea Pigs on this one! Hehe.
I thought Neotel was supposed to be a FIXED LINE service provider.According to this they are wireless thus still not competing on a level playing field with Telkom. If the internet is slow now imagine how slow its gonna be when more users come on board. ping = 500ms+
Where have you been for the last year or two?
All of the press releases and articles leading up to this point have spelled out how they were rolling out. CDMA 1st with fixed line connnectivity to come in 2009. Though the dates have been shuffled around for the last 2 years - you know, just a 100 days here and there.

But I'm in agreement with the general sentiment here.
I admit I got all excited when rph 1st came about with info regarding to the launch of the R499 offering. Guess I'm back to my pessimistic attitude concerning the SNO
Though it must be said, that the experience I had with their call centre and their agents when I called in on Friday was excpetional.
The agent promised to call me back at 15h30 with info regarding the size of caps and the prospective dates when they would be implemented.
I got the call, but no concrete info. Only the likelyhood that it would be 2months down the road when they started implementing their capping strategy.
The fact that its uncapped on trial - smells like a means to get people hooked up and then a month or two later, to cap their asses and leave them (us all) in the same boat we are now with Telscum.
Not being able to be on the net while making a call at the same time is ludicrous - laughable, disgusting! Outside investors will be looking at this with great concern I imagine.
Customer satisfaction is already down the tubes because of this oversight!
And this without them even having any residential clients!
Then the matter of local vs international? There's no word on that.
Why that distinction even needs to come into play, is our worst nightmare!
I don't mind the latency issues, for now - its a wireless based technology and I think we were all of expectant of the results.
As an online gamer, yes it affects me, but I don't really play that much these days anyway.
At this point in time, I'm dissapointed.
Telscum will be having a field day with this one.
Already they're implementing (or have implemented) upgrades for 4mb ADSL users. At this rate all they need to do is drop the rental, push me up from 384k to 512k speeds and I'll be happy - in 3rd World SA anyway.
Having to pay for extra bandwidth on top of R499 is not going down well with me! Unless they stipulate how much bandwidth I'll be getting with the initial price.
At this rate it looks dismal for Neotel.
At R499 for the premium service, which offers a rather entry level package... they're chasing people off.
I think Telscums doNoband offerings are more competitive than this, with all the free mins, etc.
To Ajay Pandey, Angus Hey and all the rest of Neotel:
Catch a bleddy wakeup!!!!
You're up against a monopoly that already are in people's homes with offerings as cheap as R120 rental for the year.
To get people rushing over in droves, you're going about it the wrong way.
You're meant to come in here and shake things up a bit.
It seems you're more along the lines of showing some seriously inept initiatives.

I just cannot believe that it will be a service where you either are connected to the internet OR you can make a phone call/ fax.
I cannot see who on earth this would benefit?
That is even before we get into pricing, capping, international vs local bandwidth or ping times...

Exactly, even if I was only going to use this on one computer why would I switch from having Wifi coverage everywhere that allows me to access 4MB ADSL to having to carry around a stupid USB phone along with my laptop.

I doubt it.
We're a realtively small community in comparison to the rest of the nation that they'll be targeting.
But with these kind of offerings, they're really up for a battle to get a slice of the pie.
Their "knives" are rather blunt at the moment.

This kind of (mis)innovation allows Telscum to yet again have some breathing room. Allowing them to bask in their profit margin without concern.

I suppose that they're in good position now to wait and see what Neotel can come up with till then.
We would only have an understanding of what difference there may be (if at all) with regards to Neotel's price per Gig in comparison with Telscum, by that time.
By the look of things Neotel would have implemented their capping strategy by then and there would be more insight into what the next year or two may hold.
Will Neotel be on par, under, or even over what the monopoly is currently selling at?
All the talk firstly from Neotel about wanting access to SAT3 to pass on savings to clients and then backtracking on that statement to say that they're not in position to make any inroads with the access they've received, because of the "cartel" running the cable...bleh bleh.
The Beast will be sitting back and watching carefully to see what may happen.
They find themselves in position to either push back with cheaper offerings, but with a longer contractual obligaion I'd imagine or to simply bombard the media with Neotel's (failing?) strategy.
They've always pushed the point that the current DSL strucutre is under pressure - no one's fault but their own!
So they're looking at Wimax to compensate.

wrt to SLA's and admittedly they've picked up their feet in some regards with actaully installing lines in under 30 days.But then we cannot forget that so many are still infuriated and battling to get the simplest things out of the monopoly.

Nearly time to go home...We may be small but we're relatively influential, I'm sure a lot of people on here have a lot of influence over the purchasing decisions of people around them.
