I will bet anyone R1000 that i can send a pigeon with a 8gig flashdrive to a friend in another town faster than he can download it from me. I will prove it with screen shots/pictures with timestamps etc. Anyone wanna take this on? :) I will also take your bettings lets go! :D

You really should do this.

I would, but i know that Telkom would start breeding killer crows that would take them out the sky. Or put bird flu in your account statements.

I think i should really do this, My grandpa used to race pigeons mmm maybe i should give the old-top a call, he has cancer now so maybe i shouldnt bother him with these things :o

On the other hand i think he'll enjoy fighting the powers that be :D

Wonder if telkom will bring in any immediate price reductions.. be interesting to see how they react

I'm still pretty positive about NeoTel. I don't think too many people were under the impression that they were going to be the instant saviour of our online world but hell it's a start. We've gone from having a complete monopoly controlling our telecoms and we've now got competition, it's a huge step forward that there's even anything on offer.

I'll take NeoTel up when they are available in my area because at the end of the day, they're still better than Telkom.

lol well it will bring a new meaning to pigeon 2 pigeon. a new type of p2p

U know maybe NEOTEL could do this and make it a big marketing ploy on TV in news papers etc. Just to mock Telkom showing how terribly slow the "other" national operator is(no need to mention names :D )
Just for fun u know maybe even spray the pigeon neotel orange(if thats legal)

Cuz i know telkom has been mocking them in some of their ads & bulletin boards why not give them some of their own medicine i'm sure they can be mocked all round. ;)

hey dont give them ideas...they use it then u should say u want a share in the profit that is gained from that ad hehehehe make money off of them

I agree. I'm hoping that this is just Neotel's starter product - their way of getting their foot in the door. At least it's something. I'm holding fingers crossed that they stay uncapped. I don't like the idea that we've all been waiting 3 years for a company that will put us on par with the rest of the world only to find ourselves pushed back to the dark ages. I'm keeping faith in Neotel, even if only because they're still a young company and because they're the anti-Telkom. Plus, the service that I've got from them over the phone has been phenomenal so far - that alone is a selling point for me.

*shrug* C'moooon Neotel!

Seeing telscumm crash & burn is payment enough! Trust me from that day onwards i'll be the richest mofo in the land

Pathetic, really.

Half the expected functionality.
Double the expected price.

Agreed. This technology sounds like a joke, yet they tried to label it revolutionary. USB, no Wifi, can't make calls at the same time, come on, Telkom's tech is better than this.

I think were all missing something here.

Remember that Neotel now also uses the SAT3/SAFE submcable, same as entire RSA. Even from my work we don't get anything below 175ms, and they have their own segment on this cable.

Wait until Seacom comes, this cable would provide far better signal quality. Since its new it hasn't been patched and joined that often yet. And with a theoretical capacity of 1.8tbits (+/-) it should start opening up the pressure on the low caps we all have.

so instead of just expecting miracles, use your head for a second. No capacity means no capacity weather its Telkom, Neotel or Brakpan-Wireless.

Pings don't bug me a lot, even as an online gamer because I've rarely gotten anything lower than 200ms on Telkom's 4mbps ADSL and that was fine. What bugs me is the possibility of Neotel going via Telkom's capping route (this seems to be a South African mindset in telecoms) and the fact that:

Another drawback is that the device can not be used simultaneously for voice and Internet access. While the device does not disconnect the Internet access, it discontinues the Internet session when making voice calls.

That is one thing that will bug me, a lot since if I want to download something that doesn't support resuming, I don't want to bite my nails worrying about whether or not someone's going to call me, or if I have to make a call. Still, it's something I can bear with until improvisations come along.

I'll be very disappointed if Neotel go the capping route... That will be the one thing that will put us back to square one.

Still, one way or the other... Neotel will have me as a subscriber - unless they do something ridiculous. I have faith that things will get better. Either that, or it's time to consider immigration :p

Well the capping route WILL be there with every new comer until the new submcable(s) are ready. With regards to the simultaneous calling and inter netting, well that kinda amazes me as well but im confident that this will be resolved before launch.
