Neotel Speed Tests

Neoconnect prime, Kenilworth. I complained here earlier about speeds below 20kb/s. Well, yesterday I walked around my flat (inside and outside) with my laptop and the phone, downloading 4 files with Getright in order to test speed. While the phone showed perfect reception everywhere, I discovered that I never fall below 100kb/s while the phone hangs out of the kitchen window; it's usually roundabout 160kb/s. I went to a friend's house and did the same for her, and she is up by just as much. So I'll have to get an outside antenna and place it carefully. Why don't they tell us that the phones basically always show perfect reception even when it's reception is crap? I suspect they can save the company with that bit of information, since most people attribute the appalling speeds to the Neotel network while it is actually the placement of the device. Now I'm one of Neotel's greatest fans.

Agreed, the devices seem to very sensitive to placement.

I have mine on top of a shelf on the second floor of my house, the higher I get it the better the speeds it seems.

Averaging 2.5 Mbps up to 3.09 Mbps on NeoFlex Data.

Although I've only had it one day, so we shall see.

What is all this RSSI stuff ?

Guys has anyone noticed a significant decrease in international speed? Local seems fine but international is terrible! Even though my speedtest below doesnt show it, i cant even load a video through youtube. Seems normal surfing is fine. Maybe youtube is experiencing problems?

Josies : 122kB/s down : 52kB/s up : 215ms latency
Mumbai : 34kB/s down : 13 kB/s up : 885ms latency
New York : 84kB/s down : 32kB/s up : 464ms latency
London : 91kB/s down : 23kB/s up : 528ms latency

also, does anyone know why latency is lower for botswana than it is for johannesburg on speedtest.net?

Sort of weird being that i live in johannesburg

I noticed that too. Ping germany, its return is 220ms, where IS which is like 2km from my house is a 344ms ping.... weird....

Update

Down 8kB/s (65kb/s)
Up 6kB/s (50kb/s)

I phoned tech support, they said they'd send someone on it and give me a call. That was Thursday...

Not cool :'(

Touch wood - I'm still getting the same speed from my connection. Downloaded Ubuntu Install CD { 700MB } in about 40 odd minutes.

I was getting those speeds for about 1 week approx 1 month ago then it returned back to normal. I wonder what caused the temporary awesomeness?

@ushir

Is returning / cancelling not an option for you ?

Only reason I got mine is because I've just moved to a new house and there is no DSL available due to line theft.

WiMax failed as well.

The minute I get significant degradation in speed I'm heading straight back to Neotel HQ.

The thing is my performance is not unusable. Its actually not bad but def not as good as it should be - thus the cost to cancel my contract and take up telkom does not make it worth my while to leave neotel.

I hate back end loading. I thought with this number mobility thing that customers should not be subjected to cancellation fees if they want to move to another carrier?

Just stop paying and tell them up yours. Tip with contracts don't sign one as a person but rather a compnay then you close the comapny and they can't touch you.

Id be happy paying these bills if i got to hit jus one neotel person in the face. It would sorta make everythin worthwhile...

Dude you'll be surprised what you get when you kick up a fuss - I'd go to the head office in Woodmead and throw toys.

No chance I'm paying any cancellation fees if push comes to shove.

And before I moved as I mentioned. I had 4mbit DSL, never had a days problem with it. Reliable, stable and fast. If you can get that, I'd make the move.

Unfortunately Internet experiences between carriers / users is a bit of mixed bag in SA. You never really know what your connection is gonna pan out like.

I'm relieved my NeoFlex is actually working as expected, and I actually quite like it, except for the latency.

Had a look on qualcomm.com at the CDMA EV-DO roadmap. Rev B at 15mbit sounds pretty good, following that speeds up to 70mbit. Long way off, but at least there's potential.

You're 2km away from me and getting awesome speeds :(
What is your RSSI and PN?

I have no idea. How do you check on a NeoFlex Router ?

Last night and when I left home this morning, my speed had dropped to 512k.

Not impressed, seem to getting dropped in 1mbit increments. I was pushing 3mbit last Friday!

Welcome to the club that DarkDenim and I have started. Joburg users that did have awesomeness now only f41l :(
