So true.
I hate MWeb with a passion, but their account was great for streaming.
So was my Web Africa I bought for testing, but they said they would THROTTLE me and not shape me if I continued using my account in the same way.
They were referring to 12.4GB used on one Saturday because the Netflix stream stayed at 1080p almost constantly.

You've still get your Web Africa 4Mb Business account right?
I asked them about Business, but they basically just said it would be in a lower contention pool.

I'd love to go for the 10Mb Biz Uncapped (cos I'm currently on 10Mb Uncapped right now) but it's a bit pricey.

What's the price on the 10Mbps you're on?

I'm on 10Meg Business.

If you work during the day and only get home at night to stream/game then you won't have any issues on Web Africa.

The Business accounts have much higher thresholds.

Thanks, I'll definitely keep it in mind.
Glad that someone can actually attest to the account working properly.

On the odd occasion though, I will fire off one (or several ;)) NNTP downloads during peak time, so that it's ready by the time I get home.
Aah well, lets see how it goes.

I'm with Afrihost, paying R900 for a bundle (10Mbps uncapped and line).
The Afrihost and WA Biz 10Mbps account goes for R1400, which is basically 50% more than what I currently pay.

Rather fire off those downloads at night if you really have to. Downloads between 00:00 and 06:00 don't count towards any thresholds.

O ok,

Reason I'm asking is that I might upgrade mine with Bitco to 10Mbps. Def looking at going to 5Mbps in the very near future. They do throttle you if you run at max line speed for 1 hour and then throttle you to 50% line speed for an hour then back to full speed. Now if I do get throttled at 10Mbps it's still 5 Mbps.

Don't know what the gaming will be like with the kids streaming in their room, wife in the bedroom and me gaming :D Eish...

Sounds like you've got a proper dilemma on your hands :D
I saw your signature and you're clearly quite happy with Bitco. Does their throttling policy also apply after hours?
How much is their 10Mbps line? Do you pay separately for your bandwidth and line?

Sorry for all the questions, just think it's easier to harass you than to wait for someone to respond to an online query :D

Extremely happy won't cover it :)

Yes it does. I have not seen it affecting me but I suppose it's all hours. There is no additional fee's it's Micro-wave so no lines or line rental. I had ADSL before and I can promise you the quality of this micro wave actually makes copper seem so 20th century :D

That's great man.
Glad you found "The One"!
Unfortunately I'm so unpredictable I can't even predict my online/downloading behaviour.
If I see something I like and I want, I want it now! I guess the Bitco route won't really work for me in that case.

There is a new ISP that should be opening doors next month, hopefully they might be better.
I guess the only way you can tell what works is by becoming an ISP whore.

LOL! Very true.

No I like they way Bitco does it as it suits my usage perfectly. I mean even if I was to run an HD stream at 10Mbps it should have downloaded the movie on Netflix in less than an hour no problem. So it will not max the line speed for an hour continously. Meaning no throttling. Even with the 2Mbps line now there is no throttle as the movie is downloaded way before the 1 hour so line speed is not raped for an hour. Even if it does get throttled to 1/2 the line speed one can still use it. I mean 5Mbps is still damn good. No killing the connection to 20kbps like some ISP's :D

Thanks for the feedback.
What's the quality like if you're streaming concurrently?
What line are you running it on?
No problems at all. We have a pretty decent 10mb line right next to the exchange, so our line helps a lot

Haha, so true about the shaping/throttling.
Sad, but true :(

Awesome, which ISP are you with?
I'm with Afrihost but their streaming is kakka.

They don't know how to identify this traffic and it gets shaped into the ground!

Don't know if it's just me...

The quality of the video quality seem to be a lot better through the PS3 as opposed to the PC

Nope, it's not you. The PS3 quality is far superior.
I've tried streaming on my PC a few times when nothing else was running, didn't get close to HD.

Also afrihost. I must say I have only had a few hiccups. I found the shaping mostly applied to torrents or downloads and the streaming pretty much ran on as usual.

You probably haven't used other accounts.
I've streamed better on an Mweb 4Mbps account, but they are honey money thieving *beep* *beep* *beep* *beep*.
You get the idea :p

anyone tried with vox telecoms?

Nah.
I called them to ask about their AUP etc, and I was told that they throttle quite a bit. Gave it a miss.
Employee didn't even put any effort into saving a potential sale....

VOX's capped accounts are the best on the market. Their uncapped accounts are just resold IS accounts.
