Here is the situation.

I have a farmer who wants his clocking system at his gate – 500 meters away from his house.

The clocking system connects to the software on the server via Ethernet only.
Apart from 50 grand’s worth of microwave or other expensive wireless solutions, what can I do?

He has a security camera system at the gate and has a pipe running the video co-ax cable to his house – together with a CAT5e cable of which only two pairs are used. (way too far to use CAT4, four wire Ethernet).

I’m thinking a PC to buffer clocking and Line driver/modems utilizing the existing physical connection. It doesn’t matter if it takes all night to transfer the data. I have two 9600 baud line modems I’m planning to play with. Maybe there is newer better technology available?

Any suggestions?

[EDIT] the existing pipe has to many right angle bends to run fiber optic which was my initial idea until I saw it.

Ethernet? Why not bog standard Wifi then? A wireless access point via ethernet to the clock system...

Very simple. Get 2 NanoStations from Scoop.

Clocking system----NanoStation _____________ NanoStation-----Server.

Works like a charm. Done it.

Why dont you use wireless - Yagi antenna each side. I am linking to my brother 4Km away using a linksys router and Yagi each side

1. The modem route will work - but lightning might bake something. So I prefer not to touch that.
2. Wireless access points sounds good... maybe this is the route to go? Ask on the forum for secondhand WuG equipment - maybe you can get something for a good price.
3. Use one CAT5 cable to pull a new CAT5 and fibre cable through - or lay a new fibre cable directly from gate to house.

Ivork. Ive done what you asking. My scenario was a small office with a DSL, then massive open fields for horses and paddocks and training rings and whatever. Then another little room/office with a pc.

The NanoStations are boss. I really would advise people to give them a try.

Librarian, Fibre was my first option - until I saw the right angle bends in said pipe and lack of man traps / inspection points. No way in this case.

I will investigate WuG option & Nanostations.

But it must not fail. I need cheap or expensive option.
Must give client honest answer.

A lot of these wireless people say 1km line of site bla bla bla - BS under practical application. Been there, done that.

Ivork, I use a Mikrotik Routerboard 411 to connect to a high site 1.5km away from me. I get up to 22Mbps and the link is very reliable.

Point to Point wifi links, when set up correctly, work very very well.

PM me if you want some help.

The right thing to use is this.

They are supplied locally by Throughput Technologies (011 705 2497). I have no idea about cost, but I suspect you'll need some Vasaline.

Edit: On second thought, if that Cat5 is standard grey PVC sheathed cable, it's probably already dead. I got an estimate on the life of a buried Cat5 cable once: the guy said about a month before the condensation kills the cable. So, wireless it is, unless you like digging.

You have 3 options.
- Fibre - will be too expensive
- Ethernet extender - might be an option - you could use a old PC as a router/extender but this just adds in a extra failure point.
- Wireless as others suggested. Will probably be the quickest and easiest solution.

Or you could ask Telkom to install a SDSL line. Its about R450p/m and its a guaranteed line.
