Most convertible (bigger) cars are gayish. If I had R400K to waste, I would go for a white Merc C350 AMG or RS4

The problem with benchmarks is that they are seldom more exciting than a mark in a bench which you should try to surpass. Not that hard to do really.
 
Haven't read through this entire thread but feel qualified to give my 2 cents in any event.

Volvo's is an interesting choice, very safe car, both in an accident and from a hijacking perspective (they don't jack them). Also quite exclusive (not too many people drive them).

You get bang for your buck with a Volvo but they suffer from massive depreciation and if you ever want to sell it you going to battle. It's simply not a premium brand (although it's built like one). Also the infrastrucutre and support base in terms of dealer ships etc may be a little thin. In any event buying one 2nd hand you may pick up a real bargain and more so considering the economic status quo so don't be dismissive...

Merc, rubbish IMO, over priced, over rated, under engineered chassis for the powerful engine ranges, service plan that is not all inclusive, common common common (around the northern suburbs in any event). Avoid at all costs..

Audi can't go wrong, best interiors, best build quality, all wheel drive systems safest for driving on our roads. Reasonable resale value, extensive maintenance plan and strong national dealer network. Audi FTW....

I know you looking for a convertible but they grossly over rated, consider the Audi A5...

Yip and it's that belief which ensures they continue to sell like hot cakes...

They are such a well established and entrenched brand that the rubbish they been building for the last 20 years has done nothing to tarnish their reputation but I see them for what they are... over priced, over rated, under engineered rubbish...
 
I driven Mercedes vehicles built from the late 60's to recent 2007 models and they are awesome cars. Their is nothing about them that feels inferior to so called "perceived quality" cars like Audi and Volkswagens. The bonus is you feel less of a yuppy/cock in a Mercedes than you do in these wannabe VAG products.

Mercedes-Benz is, was, and always will be in a class above the VAGs. Perhaps on the same level as BMWs, but different and with less of a wanna-be-cock value to it.

This is the stock standard South African misconception and its due to how the cars were marketed here and also with the state of the art (Audi has always been leagues ahead in terms of tech and not all of the technicians out here were able to deal with that.)

In Europe (where these cars are made) the Big 3 consists of BMW; Audi; Benz with Benz straggling at a distant 3rd place in that hierarchy.
Their quality has been shoddy for some time - some claim it is on the up but the message to any and all with means is clear: don't waste your time and money on a past icon that is resting on its laurels.

BTW: there is F-all 'perceived quality' in an Audi - they are excellent cars, period.

I think the motoring world wants VW to join F1, I dont see anyone asking Opel to start a F1 team!:p
 
Opel has got other things to keep them busy with for the time, like the Canadians and the Russians.

The world wants less VW and more Anything-Else.
