Quite a few options, I need to start choosing. Also looks like the Clio RS is quite nice, but ye, French cars... Might not be the best for reliability.

Anyone know how the 1L engine in the Fiesta Titanium is able to produce 92KW? how on earth does that happen if a 1.2L produces 81KW?

I'm tempted to go for second hand, I can get a nicer car, for the same price albeit, 'used'.
 
The Fiesta does it via a high revving turbo, while the 1.2 on the Polo uses a lower Rev turbo that gives more low down torque
 
The little 1L motor is turbocharged, thus pushing out more power for a small motor.
It sounds strange, but believe me they go better than most 1.6 cars!

You just gotta be hard ass. They are playing you psychologically; you just have to have the mindset that it is your money and they can go **** themselves otherwise. Understand this - they have dozens of people coming through their doors all the time trying to "negotiate". They know exactly how to play against that. They know people tend to crumble if they "want" a vehicle so badly. Stick to your guns - vehicle sales are in big trouble at the moment. And it also almost year end.

Thanks all. Going to do some car hunting this weekend and see if there are any good deals. I'm still wondering if I should rather go for a second-hand car with +- 30k KM's rather than a new less fancy car.

I'm going to check out the Fiesta Titanium, Polo 1.2 (drove the DSG, really nice, bit under powered though), Polo GTI and Audi A1.

On a side note. Is spending more money than necessary on a car really worth it? Like between an Audi A1 and a Polo for instance, is there much of a difference other than brand? (which I don't care much for, as long as it's a decent quality brand)

If you plan on keeping the car for a while, consider going new for the small difference. You will have peace of mind with the warranty, and you wont need to worry how the car was handled in the past..

Sometimes second hand isnt the best option, when the price of a new car is not far off..
Good luck with the car hunting, Go test drive the FiST aswell..

I think that may be best, considering I'm a bit of a clean freak, the thought puts me off a second-hand car just a bit. Anyone remember that Top Gear ep where they got a forensics team to check out the level of muck in each of their cars. Was pretty siff.

So, test drove the Polo GTI, awesome car to drive, quite a bit more powerful than the 1.2 TSI. Only 4000Km's (demo) on the clock for roughly the same price. Going to check out the Fiesta ST on Monday.

But I am interested to know how you compare the two..

Side note: Just a stroke of bad luck. Was driving around today and scraped the rear left wheel/tire on a pavement, damage isn't noticeable unless you look for it. But would this lower the book value/trade in at the dealership? Anyone know?
 
It shouldnt affect it at all in my experience.

Sorry I stopped reading when I saw someone wanted to pay 250k for a Polo...and not even a top spec model at that.

I might be disconnected from reality here but I would never pay that money for a Polo.

I didn't even want to pay it three years ago at 170k for a Polo and bought a second have Golf 5 GTI instead for 199k and would do it again now.

Same DSG and all the bells for 180-200k now. Keep the 50k to service it.

But my bigger worry is what car are you driving now that is so **** after 1.5 years from brand new?

I bought a 2008 model in late 2011 with 95000km on the clock so it's now 6 years old with almost 150k and its bulletproof.

Oh I see OP has since upgraded his thoughts to a Polo GTI or ST. That's much better for the money.

Agree and disagree with you there. Ye, R250k is quite pricey for a Polo, but then again it's brand new and is highline model with DSG. The main attraction here is that everything on the car would be covered for the next few years, as I may not be able to easily spend cash on car parts while I'm studying. That being said, the Polo GTI is a really lekker car to drive, the one I had a look at has 45000KM on the clock. I can't really risk getting anything with more than 40000KM's, if something breaks, the price will just be too damn high.

But, point taken :P

Current car is a Kia, gives endless issues, even though it's virtually new. I'd rather sell it now while there is mileage on the maintenance/warranty, and then get something I want and that will last me a while.

Yeah sell it earlier rather than later for sure.

But I don't see how a car of 0 km, vs 40 000km vs 80 000km will cost any different to maintain (service plan excl and something you need to pay for anyway on VW).

Closer to Cambelt service different story, or keep an eye on when the brakes were done. It's all individual car specific.

I just don't feel too comfortable paying more than 200k region for anything.
