New data service from Vodacom

I agree that data rollover will be a valuable addition, and Vodacom is definitely aware of it and working on something if my information is correct.

Although a small step forward it is good news none the less that Vodacom has launched an option to allow users to stop usage after you reach your cap. The argument is fairly simple: It is better to have this choice than not have this choice.

Personally I do not think so. People do no want to sign 24 Months contracts any more.

I agree with this as a fact, I dont want to renew mine the end of the year and might end up leaving VC if they can't give me normal contract rates without a contract...

I think you can migrate, check with your SP.

Pricing is the same as normal contract pricing.

Cool, thanks, I’ll check. Concerning though that the only benefit will be not exceeding my bundle...

V3g, if my SP is soley vodacom ie I got my contract from a vodashop. Is there anyway I can migrate to this new data service? Should I go to a vodashop, call customer care or go to the website? I think they should let us all migrate via the website

These guys (VC and MTN) will add everything they can except the ones that really count, dropping the price and data roll over.

Amen to that!

Data rollover would not be such a big thing if VC and the others charged a more reasonable rate. A lot of small businesses are tired of having no alternative to Telkom ADSL lines which are in some cases, at best unreliable. Reasonable rates would make these people switch in a flash. Where Data rollover would be a god send is to be able to buy 5GB of bandwidth and keep it as a backup for when the ADSL lines go down.

On the plus side, the Neotel options when available anywhere provide a suitable alternative to ADSL lines. I think that Neotel will really start hurting the VC and MTN business as they start to grow their coverage as the price differences are significant.

Exactly, that is why Vodacom wants as many people as possible on a 24 month contract.

Neotel is gonna be a good thing come year 1,2,3 and on - Even if YOU don't use them, they are going to benifit you.

Cheap Data FTW!

I think this is a good initiative from VC side seeing that I've had similar problems with not always "knowing" when I've reached my limit resulting in R20k+ monthly bills :D

If this is really going to work I think it best to cancel my monthly contract and move over to the top-up package when it's available.

+1 Vodacom (although you're going to loose a lot of ching now! :D )

How are the Noetel wireless options, have anyone actually moved from 3G / HSDPA to a wireless mobile neotel option?

We are moving a server onto the Lite package (only Lite available in the area at the moment) just because the ADSL lines are so unstable. I have an idea that the Telkom techie's are just switching ports when someone complains as the lines give endless c..p. Everything will be swicthed the moment Neotel have the bigger packages available in the area.

That's actually my concern, I use a 3G connection at work and at home in PTA. I wouldn't mind using a Neotel wireless connection if it's mobile and fast.

Once I got a modem (from the past 2 year contract), why would I want to stay on a contract package when the data bundle rates are the same for contract and pre-paid and I don't have to pay an extra R60/month for a modem?

Pre-paid and choice here I come!

Well said. Same here, Quite shocked though that the rates are the same on both prepaid and contract.

I got nailed R4500 on top of my bill one month. I was told that I must have downloaded too many movies, therefore its my fault. (All I use the 3G for is emails and surfing- when I'm at home). When I queried the fact that the counter showed only slightly above 500mb, the response was "oH Ja, well thats not accurate."

Then why even have it bungholes? What I don't understand is why an accurate counter can't be developed. It would need to work like net Limiter, but calculate all the bandwidth used. easy peasy right?

2) Pre Paid Data (PPDB):

- no contracts
- cash purchase of modem
- manual recharge process (sometimes quite convoluted)
- real-time data billing
- Out of Bundle charges possible, leading to possible 'bill-shock'

how can bill-shock occur on pre-paid packages?

WOW - @R2/MB that is 2,250MB over usage! That's a heck of a lot of e-mails (or surfing) on 3G

Regarding the accuracy - I think they claim it is inaccurate because there are overheads in the communication process that happen that it is unable to record. So, byte-for-byte, your counter won't match what Vodacom is billing you. Also, the reliability/stability of the dial-up manager is questionable at best, so they are just trying to cover their asses.

I certainly don't mean to defend them, though. I mean, if they can accurately track your usage, then there should be no reason why they cannot present that information to you. Even if they just pull that information in non-real-time from the Vodacom4Me web site, for example, into the program/dial-up manager.

No real reason, but many people want new modems + the pre-paid real-time billing. Thus this new product.
