New data service from Vodacom

You could have money in your pre-paid account and thus run into OOB chowing this up.

With Top Up Data, this won't happen, i.e. there is no reason to have extra money in the account (unless you're busy buying an ad-hoc bundle.)

thats why u must ensure that when u recharge, u recharge for a close as possible 2 the data bundle u want 2 purchase. also, ur "bill shock" will be limited 2 the amount u hav in ur sim. so in my case, neva more that R20. :D

My personal believe is that this product will have the biggest uptake of all data products as it effectively addresses the issues with the original 3 products (CDB, TUV, PPDB).

i thought the big issues was the data bundle rollover & the cost of out-of-bundle data. wonder where i got that from??

maybe its the optimist in me, but when i read the headline i hoped vc had reduced data rates, or done something feel-good like that. i guess 4 me, being a prepaid user, this story wasnt relevant 2 me...

For sure, but you need to actively do some stuff. This was one of the complaints we got, that it's a manual process to manage your data bundles on pre-paid.

Most people obviously do it as it's better than any kind of bill-shock but we now pretty much made it automated. This is great for example where you give your kid a fixed monthly 'data allowance'.

To be quite honest, I'm a bit surprised about all the negativity in this thread. Top Up Data was built to address the issues YOU guys had with the current system. (non-real-time billing on contract, etc.)

But you don't need to use it, no one is holding a gun against your head. As Lancelot have pointed out a few times, it seems whatever is done, there will always be a certain bunch complaining. The mind boggles....

Here is why I prefer pre paid data:
- no contracts (if there is a better offer from another sp you aren’t stuck for 24 months, also if you go on holiday you don’t need to pay...)

- cash purchase of modem (finance it if you like)

- manual recharge process (I use internet banking to buy airtime online and then buy the bundle on vodacom4me,If you run out buy some more.)

- real-time data billing (never a bad thing)

- Out of Bundle charges possible, leading to possible 'bill-shock' (if you don’t have a lot of extra money on the sim there would be no major shock):)

Support.

Some incentive on total usage and purchases won’t hurt either.

Well on Vodacom you do get talking points every time you recharge, which u can use to buy sms bundles and so on…

I need to get that, but it's tricky while i'm on contract. V3G, why don't I have that?

We did not ask for a new 24 Month contract. We want real-time billing for our current data bundles:rolleyes:

I think this is a great new option. I definitely see companies who have a number of employees on data contracts moving over to this.

I will still stick to PPDB however. With airtime discounts I will still be paying less than the the prices offered on TUD. I think Vodacom is overlooking the fact that people on PP are no risk (financially) and should be offering them incentives to sign a Top Up contract. Why not throw in the modem for free (as in not subsidised) and charge PPDB rates. That in my mind is incentive for signing up.

v3g: Any news on the ALTNUM option for PP? Does it apply to TUD?

No, the ALTNUM is a function of the CDB billing system. Still working on it.

What was requested by subscribers (many times on this forum) was to combine the best of all options, no possible bill-shock, real-time billing and modem included.

This is what Top Up Data (TUD) gives:

- contract
- modem included
- automatic monthly renewal of bundle
- real-time data billing
- NO Out of Bundle charges, NO 'bill-shock'

OR

You can just try Wi-Fi... it is much MUCH cheaper. Vodacom's Wi-Fi offering is available at:

http://vodacom.wirelessg.co.za OR

www.wirelessg.co.za

If you're traveling overseas soon it's worthwhile checking it out...
