New Electrical plugs for SA

I've done it :) Though it was a faulty adaptor that had some copper exposed and was accidental :D

You shouldn't have stuff like the office fridge and the vacuum cleaner and the coffee urn and the heater (yes, there are people who bring heaters to work) into the UPS which can either damage it with very high current draw or drain it too quickly in case of the power going out. Only really legitimate devices should be on the UPS... and that's PCs, servers and network related stuff mostly, but not laptops, they already have a UPS built in :p.

Yes, also called a 'dedicated' outlet, it doesn't allow anything else to be connected but what you chose by using the special plug.
 
I don't care what the standard is, I will use the most reliable sockets/plugs readily available, right now that's the 3 prong. If the new plug is anything like current two prong plugs and sockets in terms of reliability then there's not a chance in hell I will use it cos those things drive me nuts - seriously they constantly fall out or don't make contact.

I think your experiences are mostly with cheaply made adaptor plugs. The wall sockets are robust and they work well

I think the recessed socket looks like it will work well and prevent the thing falling out, but yeah, we will see cheaper models out there no doubt. Goedkoop is duurkoop.
What will be cool about this is being able to use your plug with any off the shelf converter when you travel. These big 3 prong SA ones are a pain. I know you get converters but if you forget to buy one in Joburg on your way out, you are snookered. I've just replaced the plug on the end and will need to again when i'm home.

My wife is checking to see if our local Builders has stock of plugs and wall sockets now (gone to get paint). Keen to convert my house. So over these huge 3 prong things.

This is good news.

I am doing over my wall sockets now. Will also go look at Builders and if it is I will instruct my electrician to install the new ones rather.

Let me know if your wife found it.

Nothing. Sigh. Zero stock of anything related to the new standard. Was getting excited.

Going to hunt around. Anyone know of online retailers with stock - and good quality?

The news24 article says "some hardware retailers have had them on the shelves for some time" so send her back out again. :)
