New Electrical plugs for SA

I'm in Kabul - does Pakistan use Euro (spade) type plugs like Afghanisitan do?
They also have round two pin outlets here.
Nobody else the world over uses SA 3 pin plugs as far as I can tell.

The thing about these new plugs is I haven't seen a converter that would fit a 3 prong that shape...

UK plugs are the best to use in Pakistan, they fit everywhere.
 
If you are unlucky in Botswana, your house may even have a mixture of two plug types: South African round 3-pins (their newer standard) and UK (3-pin squared with an inbuilt fuse, the former standard)! It can make using electrical equipment in Botswana a total pain.....

The third pin is for earth. The plug is rated 16A like our old plugs.

Why do you want to convert already? None of your gadgets or appliances will have the proper plug? :wtf:

Sounds to me like you'd be making your life harder for no reason. :p

You go know all the two pin plugs (cellphone chargers and decoders and similar) work with these "new wall sockets" right?

I think the new socket will be a great improvement over the current standard as at least it will be able to take the Europlug and it's compact.

Still, I don't think it's the best format. If you take the 3 prong plugs overseas, you won't be able to use them there. Also, the Schuko / round European standards won't work natively.

At work, when we get bulk PC shipments, they usually arrive with Schuko style plugs. For health and safety reasons, we do no re-wire any of the cables so it means with the new PCs, we need to order new kettle plugs for the South African standard. We have boxes and boxes of Schuko plugged cables lying around that we can't use.
If we go with this proposed plug, we will keep doing the same thing.

I would think that maximum compatability would be the primary factor as it simplifies life and reduces costs.

I'm sure any inherent additional safety of the new plug will quickly be eroded by the cheap adapters and poor rewiring for compatability with round style plugs.
 
I do really really like this new standard. The best way to lead is from the front, this might be the first time ever our govt has done something truly progressive!

I hate our crap old fat 3 pin jobbies. This new standard is going to be excellent, I cant wait. Hopefully in time more of the rest of the world adopts the same (I know it will be a super slow process).

Great safety, big amperage ratings, no stepping on upright pins, recessed sockets, old 2 prong plugs will work too, better space usage, less need for multiplugs (so saving there!), directional cords if you want and moulded plugs... all VERY positive here. I don't really know why people are moaning so much?
