This is excellent news and hope it does not affect the price in anyway 'cause it will repel a lot of people. As it is I'm thinking hard about getting a decoder; I had made a decision to stick on SD-PVR because of limited channels and software bugs that annoying the viewrs. My biggest challenge now is to get the idea approved by my CFO :D

The channel is the only global high definition television brand offering factual entertainment, selected from various Discovery channels as well as exclusive content that can only be seen on Discovery HD Showcase. The channel covers a variety of programmes including science, technology, people, places and natural history.

What about National Geographic HD, National Geographic HD, History HD
Guess they dont count as factual :D

I don't trust their HD marketing anymore after this fiasco.

The Discovery HD showcase will be watered down too. European Discovery HD = 35mbps. SA HD channel currently broadcast at < 1/3 of that.

Well the cricket in HD, when not having technical issues, has been brilliant. Cannot wait for this!

Great news for the HD owners, but I can see my SD picture getting even worse now - as it is, they cannot seem to broadcast SD conent properly, so how the system is going to cope with 2 additional HD channels I don't know... I'll stick with my HD downloads! ;)

well it may only be the test transmission but really 1280 x 720 does not cut it.

1920 x 720 yes

1920x720?

What odd aspect ratio is that?

1280x720 is 16:9 HD Broadcast standard.

Actually it has been really compressed. Sport on MnetHD is by far better looking. It is so far a test channel so they still need to iron out the flaws.

Bull****. There is no reason on earth to broadcast a 720p MPEG 4 stream at anything like 35Mbps. Europe's Discovery HD must be using MPEG2to require that bandwidth. And if so, it's like comparing an apple to a porcupine.

The number I've seen bandied about for Discovery HD was 20Mbps in EU.

Anyways, I think this signals the time to buy an HD PVR...gonna be on leave for 2 weeks so may as well anjoy HD while I'm at home.

Any HD PVR specials?

best thing about the HD decoder is you can keep the SD decoder for more channels and not pay anything extra :)
Hooked up my brothers HD and SD so he has 3 recording channels and 3 viewing channels for 3 rooms.
Watching the classifieds for a SD to replace my 1110 and hook up to the HD.
Hope we get F1 next year in HD :)
