New iPad 2 from the USA - will it work here?

If I import a 'Verizon' or 'AT&T' iPad from the US will it work on our 3G networks?

AT&T will work one I bought in SA from official supplier came with AT&T sim card in it. Not sure about verizon one.

I think these iPads will be network locked as the iPhone 4's are. On the website they say if you buy a AT&T or Verizon iPad they will only on the network you purchased for. I am not sure if this means they will be locked or not but I would wait till someone has a review.

I will be unlocked, similar to how the iPhone4 is unlocked (via Vodacom at least).

Yes, but you create for yourself both an SA and US account. That way you get the best from both worlds. Been doing this for 2 years on my iPHone 3G and now iPHone4. It will work similar on the iPad.

If you're unsure about the 3G locked/unlocked, just check with the reseller of the iPads. Also note you must get yourself an micro sim (smaller than your standard SIM cards)

Don't get the Verizon CDMA version it won't be compatible with our networks. Only the AT&T GSM version will work. Apparently only iPads sold in Japan are network locked in the rest of the world they are not.

I agree. You won't get a CDMA version iPad here on sale unless you ship one in from the US. Then you should check first.

If you can wait, wait for the iPad2 to be launched here.

Key point - phones that work on Verizon do NOT take sim cards. That applies to the ipad as well. It's a CDMA network, and not compatible here in SA with our GSM networks (so even if the phone had a sim slot it would have a different radio altogether anyway). So if you're gonna get an ipad from the states, then it MUST be an AT&T version (coz it has a sim card slot), and even then it might be network locked...if not then you're in luck. if it is, then you gotta wait for a jailbreak before you can use your local (micro)sim.

Yes, as long as you insist on an AT&T 3G iPad you will be fine. I went to the USA in May last year and my iPad worked right out the box with Vodacom/MTN. I am going back to the USA in May this year and will get the new iPad 2.

Like Syn says, all iPads are unlocked. The AT&T version is built for the GSM network (same as us) and the Verizon version uses the CDMA system - which won't work here.
