If they implement a 300gb cap to reduce congestion on the network, it means that the network will only be freed later on in the month because no one is hitting the cap in the first few days of the month.

I'd suggest they rather cap 10gb per day. Its more manageable and at least if you went way out today, your speed will be reset tomorrow.

Well not exactly that people will be more self conscious now with using their data. So in theory it will be better. It just like saying you dont have to pay for petrol but now they like you get 4 tanks in a month. so now you will try spread your data usage over the month just like your fuel. What now if you want to download something today thats once off which is 25gb then your 10gb per a day cap will become a problem ?

How would one download a 60gb game?

It's marketed as a streaming service :whistling:

Fair point though.

Where?
I don't know when this turned into a steaming only service, But please see below the original "marketing"

Uncapped wireless broadband is really uncapped for almost all applications and uses. These include email, browsing, streaming traffic like video, music, YouTube, AppleTV, Box Office, Netflix, VPN, VOIP, real time online gaming, backups and gaming downloads.

I can just about live with the revised FUP but Telkom should make top up bundles available at R2 per gig for the big hitters who cannot.

Rather at R1 a gig since bandwidth / data is no longer a scarce commodity, it shouldn't be treated like water for example, it should be a lot cheaper the more you use it.

That is however besides the point. 300 gigs, though it might be adequate 99% of the time, still deviates from the original contract that I have signed, fact is, I just find Telkom untrustworthy, if only I get Fibre where I am but that might still be years.

I really don't want Telkom to get away with it this time, they should at the very least, publicly apologize for their mess up, apologize for creating such a FUP that they never bothered to communicate to subscribers about, and I still maintain that 300gb is low, 500 will be safe to cover those months when I do pull 3 games from steam so I can still watch shows afterwards.

Have you considered that having a 500GB FUP might affect almost nobody and therefore achieve nothing? Even 300GB seems to affect far less people now.

The goal is to improve network performance for everybody, including fixed cap LTE customers like me.

It's not supposed to affect anybody really, it's "supposed" to be uncapped. Now, it's not.

Some presentations in Parliament by Gareth Cliff on #datamustfall.

Not sure what it entails.

Xbox one store, PS4 store or Steam, have your pick.

(all of them has their own download managers if that's what you are asking)

Haha, noooo... Some1 was saying they should implement a 10gb/day threshold... Y does everyone always fail to mention Origin, cant have Battlefield without Origin...

The prob here is NNTP, iv been there and done that... All these guys pushing over 1tb i garantee are downloading via NNTP, all you do is set it to port 80 and turn SSL on and then Telkom has no idea what type of data is moving as its SSL encrypted, so it bypasses the 50gb p2p and NNTP limit. NNTP downloads run at full speed always, unlike torrents, so its easy to move terrabytes of data in a month. So by implimenting a limit on entire usage theyv managed to curb the NNTP downloads. Its not fair though. Im assuming, from an ISP perspective, that there's no way for them to block NNTP if its SSL encrypted so theyv had to enforce overall usage throttling. But surely there must be another way.

The fact of the matter is that a one-sided decision was made to change a binding contract. I rarely use more than 250Gb, but remember this time of year lots of new games come out at +- 60Gb a shot.

There was no small print anywhere in the contract that I signed with Telkom that indicated they can willy-nilly change the contract to suit them.

I missed that article on mybroadband for the new limits.. apparantly people are ecstatic about being throttled. Stupids
I despise throttling and this still isn't the product I signed up for but I am happy about not being throttled to completely unusable speeds in future and I'm willing to deal with this new AUP until my contract expires.
This product initially made me trust Telkom for once but after this disaster I'll never sign a contract with them again unless it's the only option I have but I'd first consider moving to a place that's serviced by a different provider.

There is small print indicating they can make changes to their usage policy, you will get no where legally.

Best bet is for a lot of people to cause a **** storm over social media.

People!

The new revised throttling rules are a relief to many. The first edition was a clusterF$%k but for many, like myself, we can make this new limiting work.

Telkom have already used their get out of jail free card - they will let you out of the contract without penalty. CPA is going to be happy with that - a "refund" satisfies them with regards to arguments between customers and suppliers. If you hand your hardware back, you have lost nothing as you were paying for what you used monthly via a monthly debit order. When that stops, you and Telkom go your separate ways.

We all have 2 options - take the deal, or go hand your stuff back and cancel. Yes it sucks that unlimited and uncapped is no more for this product, but they have given 2 alternatives. It's time to pick one and stop moaning!

I don't think I'm done moaning quite yet, although my mood's a lot better than what it was on Friday. :p Some things still need to be said.

Telkom's new full speed cut-off is 300GB; 50% more than what it was which looks nice in a press release, but it's a whopping jump from 8% to 12% of what they were calling abuse initially. That's not a particularly noteworthy concession, although it will be bearable for many more. Why the 50GB increase in p2p allowance? I didn't see anyone asking for that, but again it looks snazzy on a presser...

Thinking about it, the simple addition of an unmetered night-time window would make just about everyone happy. They probably won't go for it, but there's no harm in posing the question...

I also believe this is an option they should consider. If they included this, only the peak evening streamers would be left to be unhappy

If you can have your downloads - gaming and otherwise - not count towards your usage with some simple scheduling, 300GB will give you between a hundred and three hundred hours of Netflix streaming. Obviously you'll be eating into that allowance during the day, bringing your tele time down a bit, but if you're looking to stream appreciably more than that in a month you probably need to reevaluate your lifestyle. :D
