Well I am the OP on this topic and like I said I average 150GB with July being a spike of 250GB.

Just got the email too also complaining about excessively high usage. Ridiculous for all the reasons everyone has pointed out. Most usage is Netflix and YouTube and probably a 50/50 split of HD vs SD and only have SD as during peak times network performance can drop so low that we cannot watch 2 HD streams at once.

Well fibre installation into our neighbourhood has come at the right time and is almost complete. If I notice a drop off in throughput from Telkom from next month (I already average below 15Mbps because the backhaul is clearly so poor on our tower) then I will simply cancel citing their failure to honour their own Ts & Cs.

Just following on from the email we have all received, perhaps if everyone can post their July usage as well as what specific content you consume the most.

250GB - Netflix (HD:SD 50:50) and YouTube (HD:SD 50:50)

One does not simply cancel a Telkom Contract...

Yep got a mail. You sell me a product for streaming and then complain that I stream.
Show me abuse ito torrenting and I will gladly limit myself.
Useless planning or overcommitment.

Im waiting for my email. Hulle gaan *** kry van my af.

If only telkom had a usage tool (exclude the total data used on router, havent cleared that in months) i would be able to measure all the content i stream via Netflix. And alot of the content is in 4K so alot of data is consumed.

But the fact of the matter is, this uncapped service was truly meant for streamers and should continue to be. I actually stopped all the pirating of series :) ; and went legit but now it seems piratebay is calling us back now.

If telkom skimps on their word, i will surely find a way to download at peak speeds and spread the word around so we can sabotage their network.. if u read the news,, somesones really giving it to them

Still haven't received an email or sms. I'm starting think it may be because the bulk of my usage is not during peak hours. It's possible peak hour usage is what triggers the warning.

Would be so moronic of Telkom to expect streaming off peak.
But I thought TECHNICALLY peak is working hours?

Very easy to cancel. Done it twice on mobile contracts. ADSL is another story.

These golden lines, repeated above and all over the interweb, are very important...

Uncapped wireless broadband is really uncapped for almost all applications and uses. These include email, browsing, streaming traffic like video, music, YouTube, AppleTV, Box Office, Netflix, VPN, VOIP, real time online gaming, backups and gaming downloads.
For these you will never be capped and throttled

Clearly their legal department didn't review those lines before publishing.

What I think telkom must maybe do at most otherwise instead of a cap is to in force speed controlling, so between let's say 5pm till 11pm they should allow a users max speed to be at 15mbps down and they around those times they give you the minimum 35mbps I think they stated but some people get up to 100mbps I average 60mbps so whatever your max is. This will reduce the congestion I fell instead of forcing these capped options on people.

Erm, why would it reduce congestion? All those same people still want the same content and therefore it will congest.
If there is 500Mbps of backhaul and there are 1000 users, you will still end up with every user having 0.5Mbps throughput. By implementing the 15Mbps regardless of congestion, you're just annoying your users.
A better idea would be a QoS that automatically adjusted that you have min speeds reserved, e.g. 250 people are requesting data, split it so that everyone gets at least 2Mbps. If some people don't need the full 2Mbps, e.g. half only need 1Mbps, then you give the other half the 1Mbps "left over" from those users. There is no set data limit, there is only a bandwidth limit (which can cause a data limit :p).

End effect: Get enough backhaul and implement a QoS, they probably already have QoS in place though.

Each tower has a limited amount of users... they capped that so work within those values of tower capacity

A colleague of mine received an e-mail from them regarding high usage (his was under 200gb) in July.

I wonder what their idea of 'excessive' is

They started ignoring those caps I think, they let a lot of people sign up for the R799 uncapped deal. Anyways, 300 people if they all stream YouTube 1080p at the same time will use ~1.2Gbps, that's not counting that most have 2/3 streams open, whether it would be due to others in the households watching streams as well or because you are looking for a video.

Yeah... I have a time-stamped screenshot of exactly that stored away. I don't see them wiggling out of that if push does, indeed, come to shove.

August usage so far: "Hello! You have used 381769 MB of your inclusive SmartBroadband Uncapped Wireless service."

I only stream, mostly 1080p. No p2p.

No email received.

I also got email now, no idea how much I used though, how do you guys get the usage numbers? The *188# on the ussd section doesn't work.

If Telkom throttles then I will insist on early cancellation, now if only I can get Fibre....
