Well he is a symbol of our democracy based on a few filtered out facts. My grandfather was in exile in Zambia, just like your Zuma's and other ANC bigwigs now, only diff is he was part of the PAC, Zuma is ANC, so I tend to know more about other liberation movements than your average media consumer. He might represent "an ideal symbol", but does it make it right? Doesn't Biko deserve just as much limelight for his sacrifices and beliefs for South Africa to be where it is? How about Tambo? Madiba gets too much credit sometimes than he actually deserves. It's like he is South Africa's proverbial managerial employee of the month, while everyone else in the background also doing more. Not saying strip him of his accolades BTW, I'm just saying recognize others like you do Mandela. Simple!
 
... well ... doesn't seem to have fazed any of the ladies down at Teazers ... none seemed to care whether buffaloes/cheetahs or Mandela's face spent the evening in their panties ;)

If you want to see fake notes, go to Beunos Aires in Argentina. A monumental problem that is getting worse. Even in the bus coming from the airport there were people offering to change US$ for Pesos at amazing rates. All the money you get like that is fake. The locals can spot it immediately, but for a tourist new in the country it is alarming.

The UK also has a huge problem with fake 1 pound coins at the moment.
 
I'm not really impressed by the design of the new note. It looks, and feels, like play money, to me.

Quite happy with the one I have seen in hand so far :)
(R20, mandela on the front, Elephant on the back).
Certainly a 1.
 
Regardless of the politics, I think the things are FUGLY beyond belief. The background patterns are reminiscent of my grandmother's faded curtains from the 70's, there is no coherent design sensibility, just a seemingly random hodgepodge of overlaid elements. But perhaps the most offensive assault on good taste, is the sickly shades of colours they've chosen for the notes, most particularly the R50 which looks filthy even when it's brand new.

I'm sorry, but these notes look like they were designed by a committee of demented kindergarten artists.
