I like the idea of rewarding valued members, but I've always felt that the rep button is far too discrete. There's plenty of wasted space where it is situated, so why not make it bigger and have it say 'Thanks'? That way you get the best of the rep metre and thanks systems.

Most users will have no idea that they can give back to posters with rep. Hence it tends to build much more slowly than need be.
