Just a word for the non believers - you must realise that most of those cars were pretty cheap, compared to what we pay now - my new 83 GTi was just over 9 k brand new, and used ones were in the 5 to 6 k range, so it was possible to change cars without much hassle at all.

If you take what I was earning as a teacher, plus doing extra work on the side, I was definitely better off than I am now, but you must also take into account that car prices have escalated way beyond actual inflation. In 1983 a teacher could easily afford a new GTi every year - I doubt if they could come close to it now.

That first little Opel of mine cost me R 350, and I traded it in 3 months later for R 750, and all that I had done was clean it up. Car prices also remained fairly stable as well.

A pity we cannot go back to that.
 
You have never owned a Honda, no wonder you couldn't find anything better than Scoobies yet... :)

:D My sister had a 1987 Honda CRX that did 450 000 miles before the speedo jammed ( she was in the States ) - great little car that I used whilst I was there in 88 - she died in 2004 and was STILL driving it!

I'm afraid I have a similar reaction to a Corolla when it comes to Honda - great cars, but as boring as hell IMO

Subaru has been losing market share for a long time. Only the forries have been holding it up. The 100 cars that were sold in one month, does not make it mass market appeal.

No. Of all the choices, that wouldn't really feature on my list, and part of the appeal is that they sell 100 a month only.

LoL Subaru has been growing market share steadily, and the last 2 years has by far been their best. Mis-informed much?

Maybe the new ones will turn that around for you. New Type R is looking really great at the moment.

Please cite your NAAMSA figures.

Subaru market share is 0.3 % it was way higher in 2005. Subaru sold 1658 vehicle in 2005.

The sales for the last couple of years have hovered around the +1100 mark. Yet the number of cars sold has grown since 2008. Ergo Subaru market share has decreased.

And some people think that South Africa is the world. LoL 1100. Quoted by one of the car reviewers that Subaru sells more cars in America than VW does now. Who cares about 1000 when you are selling hundreds of thousands in the states. Their market share is higher than it's ever been. Go google it, banana.

Edit: Subaru has been setting sales records almost every month since 2012. Sold in excess of 350 000 in the states alone in a year. So their strategy is very much working!

Ye my mom bought a brand new Ford Escort at 21 years old as a secretary/admin.

I think in todays terms that would probably be a R200,000 a car and most 21 year olds can't get that :/

I've never had a VW and not a huge fan - but my stepbrother bought a Golf R 2 weeks back. Wow - very nice car, very quick and awesome gear shifts. He chipped it a week back and takes an A45 AMG with ease from the line, and then neither closes the gap - neck on neck

Red is NICE. I am sure you will enjoy the car. They are running nicely in this cold air.

Here is mine. I have owned it for 12 years. No squeaks or rattles and still gives me more smiles than my other cars.

Very,very nice - I love the Bugeye - you can also see the family DNA between your car and the new one. :)
