New The PC Build Thread

In some ways it is good news, but people wanting to build an AM4 system I would advise going with a 5700X3D. It is well-priced and a damn good overall processor. For lower end processors, AM5 caters better to it. Something tells me that AMD still needs to move AM4 motherboards (chipsets). All AM4 X3D processors are now retired, the exception being the 5700X3D, but I don't see it having a long run.

Not knowing where the 9800X3D will be priced at, I think new buyers will be uncertain to spend cash until the price is known. Its price could potentially impact all other CPU price positions. Possibly what AMD wanted with Intel's new generational release.

PC retailers/etailers are going to have a good sales month in November I think.

Igor Labs has made a thermal paste database:

For DIY PC builders, it is a good guideline, and will help you buy the right paste. The one crucial thing that is not on the table is a "pump out" indicator, essentially at which temps paste would become, uhm, volatile? It is a long-term test, and not all pastes have the same silicone oil properties. Neither can all paste be applied as pea drops or whatever suitable method since there is some technique to the more viscous pastes. Igor elaborates on this in several reviews on paste. There are optimal thickness and pressure to the method.

The table is ok, as are the comparisons. For example:

XTM70 vs MX-6

He does remark in his conclusion,

XTM70:

Slightly better performing paste with average durability, suitable for graphics cards in mid-term operation.

MX-6:

Slightly better performing paste with only average durability, not suitable for graphics cards in long-term operation

The ID Cooling Frost X45 seems to be a good paste. The Kooling Monster KOLD-01 (not the 2023 batch) is also good considering its value. Sad that Corsair pastes are so expensive, and the Grizzly-gang always schit on it even though Grizzly paste is not as good as the company wants you to believe. Though as I understand, the Grizzly paste will be renewed, and they also have the Polar, separate brand, going now to compete with Arctic. I always recommend MX-6.

He needs to add more pastes, and also do a separate thermal pad (phase change) table.

Sometimes the Cooler Master Makergel goes on special, and when in stock, it is below R 150. You don't need more than the regular version. It is good value. Some time ago I got it priced at R100.

Arrow in the knee Lake  , looks like Intel's latest platform has some teething issues.

I reckon Linus is right with this one. It could be Intel's Zen moment. 1st generation isn't great but it's an architectural shift which allows for good gains in the future (Like we've seen with Ryzen). Otherwise they've pulled an Amber Heard.

It's the first time in quite awhile since Intel has actually done this, will have to wait and see. AMD did it with the Ryzens and that actually shook up the market, even when it came to the server market. CPUs actually changed :-), no just a V1,V2,V3 Xeon

Okay so forgot what a schlep it was to replace a cpu on an existing machine :). Cables are a mess as well sigh.
Will do the 1600AF to the 5600 another time :)

My nephew yanked the 3600X I gave him out with the cooler when he upgraded. It was stuck solidly to the cooler and took hair-drying and alcohol to get off. The stock cooler is a liability with that cement glue stuff they ship it with...I've never had aftermarket paste behave like that.

That's what I'm not looking for on the 1600af :( my after market cooler master paste was still nice and gloopy after 2.5 years.
I've also got to flash the bios to accept the 5600, plus swap the m2 sata with a 500gb nvme

Just run something intensive like Cinebench beforehand to soften the paste, should be good to go.

Actually looking for a used PSU that is least 400w - and has 2 of those 6 pin connectors for the GPU.

What PSU do I need that has these connectors for the GPU? My old psu has only a 8 (6+2) pin gpu connector.

Something like this might work, but just let someone else comment to confirm in case I'm wrong or its risky to use.

Looks good. I wonder if the power draw is equivalent to a 12V rail like 75W though.

Also learnt that the silicon fan "screws" can sometimes vibrate loose, so I've got my rear fan back on normal screws.
