MSI Mag will also do just fine, only really difference between ATX3.1 and 3.0 is a change to the HPWR connector. it is backward compatible.

Thanks for all the advice, it’s really helpful. I have chatted to my son and pushed him to fork out the extra 200 for the Antec to have something that will last an upgrade cycle.

No problem.

Yeah it always fun shopping and building a system. But yeah. Not the greatest time to be upgrading with all the increases. stock shortages. It is only going to get worse.

If you can manage to upgrade the GPU before the end of the year I would jump on that as there is a looming price increase, in jan maybe December as well.

Yea it is fun, it tickled my nostalgia nerve, it’s fun to spend my “sons” money on a pc.
We have a deal for a loan contingent on exam marks for the GPU, let’s see…
Thanks again, ordered everything from progenix except the SSD.

Yeah did that earlier this year, son has a 5700x3d, 32GB RAM, Intel B580

After a good nights sleep and some reflection with my son I think we got caught up in the whirlwind last night and the spec creep caught us badly. Having a nice base platform is great but being in debt for a year seems silly for his very first pc. It is also unlikely he will have enough money for platform upgrades in the next two years.
We think in the end it’s better to get him started on an entry AM4 build, let him enjoy some games and focus on getting nicer peripherals for the next year or two ( monitor, gaming keyboard, etc)

I would just add a hard drive or larger ssd, game sizes are rediculous these takes so storage will become an issue. Can always a buy a portabl ssd later I guess

750 is fine for that build, people go way overboard on power supplies, even 750w maybe too high for your build, you want your power supply to be 50 to 75% used not 30 to 50%.
The 9060xt is a 160w card, the cpu is 88w max from checking things out, the other components will draw even less, so you're probably looking at a 550 to 600w psu. Unless you're aiming for upgrading the 9060xt any time soon.

That PSU is a no go mate.

Also you are buying a dead platform, you can't carry over much to a new build. You better off going AM5, even with a lessor CPU, There is one more CPU generation coming to the AM5 platform, am5 CPU's will still be around next year and a opportunity to upgrade CPU later.

You are honestly doing your son and self a disservice.

Problem is it is an old ATX 2.5 PSU, it not great. To start with.

Problem is DDR5 RAM is now hecticly expensive vs the DDR4 RAM for 32GB. Plus saying it's a disservice when that PC can still be used for a good couple of years now isn't a bad thing.
The one thing people still haven't learnt, don't wait to buy, if you have the funds, buy what you can now, cause waiting will generally always lead to higher prices. Rare circumstances do they drop, but rare. In my 30 odd years of building PCs the increase in prices is far more inevitable vs the other way around.

This is the best that could be done on the AM5 platform and it's still a grand more
SSD the klev from Evetech is a good price of R999 for a 1TB, those WD greens aren't the best either. Plus for that build 550w is also perfectly acceptable and comes in at 56% of the power supply. Plus the 7500f is the same as the 7600 in gaming anyway just lacks the igpu. It's also a step into AM5 territory. Also look at a 5050 vs the 7600, the 5050 is probably the better choice, especially now

My thinking is that he probably won’t do a CPU upgrade for at least 3 years but I get your and wizards point of starting from a better base.
White case is a no go for him.


Maybe this is then better, with the SSD from Evetech.

That looks the same, also you don't need thermal paste, the CPU cooler will come with a tube, sometimes just enough to cover one install. But from the three I've done this year, I've now got 3 tubes of thermal paste :-), which is probably a good thing as my old paste was finally finished anyway.
Honestly, this would be the build I'd go for
The GPU is a 16GB and far more future proof then any 8GB but if you need to go 8GB for costs
The 5060 is a better be to the 7600
But at only R400 more the 5050 is also still better

That's why I recommended it. He is better off with this system than the AM5 with no GPU. He wouldn't have had a fun time gaming on integrated graphics for however many months he was planning to save up for a GPU.

Don't get anything less than a 1Tb drive though. Games are big nowadays and having only 400Gb for it means only a handful will ever be installed and he'll forever be deleting and installing new ones.

And pay the R850 for peace of mind. Let Wootware build it for you. That means they will also install W11 and bench the system for you. That way the youngster doesn't get a chance to make a mistake that'll end up costing you more time and money.


Windows will be installed but not activated. Get a key for whatever version they install at Carbonite - https://carbonite.co.za/index.php?forums/microsoft.127/

Its a pity they don't have a 5600 in stock. Could have saved money there on the CPU side and it would have carried the system just fine.

Where's the fun in getting someone else to build it? Especially with the AM4 board with the PGA socket it's not easy to break, plus you just need to put a pea drop for thermal paste. I got my 13 year old to build his own machine. They are far, far easier to build nowadays then they were.
I did 3 in a row in August, the biggest time waster is cable management, but the size of this system there won't be much of that and the non modular you just shove the unused cables in next to the power suppy.

Oh I get that, for sure.

I just remember him saying he last build 20 years ago. and I don't know how schooled the laaitjie is so I'm playing it safe.

Ýeah doubt I will upgrade any time soon, just want the option and might also improve the reasle value. I see teh 750w full modular is not in stock anyway so might go with the 850 sem modular unless I find a deal in the next 2 days

Not a lot has changed in 20 years, besides the no hard drives, you just slot the nvme in to the slot, just assemble everything outside the case, CPU on to motherboard, cooler on, ram in, nvme in. Make sure the standoffs are in the correct place and get screwing :-).
Unless it's a cooler as big as the A620 and Peerless Assassins ;-) cause you'd struggled to get to the CPU power and the screw on the top left. Though for the CPU cable and motherboard getting extensions can make it easier apparently, as you plug in the extensions before you mount, feed them through the holes and secure behind to the actual power supply.
Also helps with modular power supplies.

Honestly it's a waste of money, plus technically you'd be losing efficiency going way overboard on power.
