News server related queries

Am I the only one who is having problems downloading in the last 24 hours? The threads start to connect, but nothing happens, then it times out, etc etc. Nothing I've seen before.
 
My IS news is also dead. SaiX is not doing much better :-(
How long will it last this time??
 
I have had no joy in getting an answer to this question.

I have a server with 3.2 terabytes of diskspace. How can I duplicate everything that is cached on a news server? Basically I want to duplicate everything that is being cached on a news server. It will come down fast and I will not have to go and look for items. It will all be duplicated on my box.

AFAIK caching is dynamic and seemingly arbitrary - I cant see that it would be possible.

setting up the server is not the problem... you just do a search on Google...

but how are you going to pay for 3.2 Terabytes of bandwidth in South Africa??? :eek:

That's what the server will use to cache everything on the other usenet servers... at current South African bandwidth rates you are looking at several million rand a month. ;)

The only ones who can afford to run News Servers in South Africa are those Tier 1 providers on a backbone (IS and SAIX)... as far as I know most other ISPs in South Africa have abandoned their Usenet servers.

I dont think he wants to set up a news server per se - just download all the cached content that is on IS or SAIXs servers at any given time onto his server.

LOL! That's barely enough for one day's worth of articles. Take http://beta.binaries.nl/ as an example, it indexes 110 TB of articles, and that's for the last 45 days, making it roughly 2.5 TB a day.

Everybody would love to know exactly what is cached, but there's no way to know other than downloading it and see what speeds you get.

either way, he's going to be transferring a truckload of bandwidth every day!!!:eek:
 
Nooo. I did,nt say I wanted to download everything in one day. As cached items come down the fastest, I want to download whatever I can in a day. If I can download 2 gigs per day, then that is fine as long it is items that are cached and will come down at the fastest speed a 2 meg link allows. I don't want to go and look at specific stuff and download it. I want it to be an automatic process. If somebody drops an item in cache, then I just want to mirror it as fast as possible.

I dunno if there is any way to automate it. You will just have to read the "latest cached" section on the server forums to see what is cached and what is not. Seems a bit of a waste to want to download stuff that you may not end up using. Bandwidth is too costly in this country to just download any old thing.

As I said earlier, there is no way of knowing what is in the cache, unless you get all the users to contact you and tell you what they cached, or you get IS to contact you and let you what is cached. I don't see either of those two happening.
 
I have a question for the people that have used the various search engines. I have always used newsleecher, subscribed to their search engine service, but as that is comming up for renewal i want to look around a bit.

I see NZBmatrix has a vip option for $10 and NZBsRus has one for $30.

Has anyone ever used these search engines, and which one is better, they both look practically the same, with the same number of articles returned on a search, but the one asks $10 and the other one $30. So which one is better? And why?
 
I see uunet as a news server aswell but dont think its hosted localy. news.uunet.co.za resolves to 66.8.123.131. Or maybe that ip is local cause i get low pings to it.
