about time, the comment section on news24 is a horror show.

I don't like censorship, but the News24 comments are a dark pit of hatred. I didn't like them linking comments to facebook accounts, but thought that it may reduce the amount of bile that was spewed. It didn't work out that way.

The only reason I read news on news24 is for the entertaining comments.

Surprised it took them this long..

The article explaining it was quite amusing to...

Should have just read
"We're turning off comments because most of you are racist and don't have 2 brain cells to rub together"

Please don't allow those hooligans in here!!!!! I stopped reading news24 years ago partly because of the comments.

/battens down the hatches.

New security questions:
Who did Telkom?
Whom did news24 do?
Who is the real EKS?

Any suggestions?

The end result of these debates is that we have decided that we wish to be known for the quality of our content rather than for our comments.

Each day the tone and substance of many of our comments appear increasingly at odds with the mission of editorial excellence which we have set for ourselves.

Seriaas?

Comments tediously drift towards hate speech at worst and, at best, are often laced with prejudice.

Interesting and considered contributions are drowned out by a cacophony of insults from a minority of users.

+1

If one looks at the internet I reckon the idiots have won, you see this schite everywhere.

One of the few places that would be improved with less opinions is News24 :/

This is a good idea. News24's comment section was a cesspool of hate and bigotry, adding less than no value.

I think they're making a huge mistake.. The comment section is what distinguishes news24 from other news site. I mean, others may have a comments section, but not the huge number of people visiting the site (thus the number of comments). Now it'll be just another news site.

They do need to change the system to eliminate the trolls, but not by removing comments entirely. Perhaps a reddit style system should be adopted.. Comments should be displayed by the number of points (upvote/downvote ratio), and not by time posted. That way, the comments that actually contribute something are listed at the top. Then, comments that score below a minimum threshold (upvote/downvote ratio) should be hidden. That should hide all the troll comments.

“Contributions will be evaluated by our editors and published if we feel that they are interesting and valuable.” - Advocates for freedom of speech.

One of those difficult issues. Fully agree the comments are horrid but it also shines a light on the underlying issues that still haunt this country.

Turning off these comments effectively supports Zuma's 'Good News' policy.
