I am still seeing that intermittent spike, it is more pronounced on my Afrihost accounts, with packet loss too nogal (packet loss at every single hop last night on every single thing) but no PL on non-Afrihost accounts with a less pronounced spike.

Phone dead sounds like a bad line fault. Report your voice line being down, receives higher priority than ADSL line faults.
