Nokia 6110 Navigator

The 6110 sold in SA has the SA map installed and with voice and arrow indicators. Mine came with a 512 Mb micro SD card. Nokia do make a great car kit. One part is attached to the windscreen (HH-12) with a universal Holder CR-39 (rubbish). There is a special cradle for the 6110 - the CR-48. This cradle holds the phone very securely and allows you to slide open the phone. You can also activate the 'My Own Key'. The other great thing about the CR-48 is that the power attached to the BOTTOM of the cradle. Use the DC-4 charger from Nokia - it has a 2mm (?) connector. The normal Nokia chargers I have a bigger (3.5mm?).
Great phone - pity about the service from Route66 (oh yea - and the lack of NOKIA feedback).

Inside the phone was the first place i checked, when i press the nav button it takes me somewhere over europe and when i zoomed in on ZA it tells me that i don't have the map. The people from exactmall e-mailed me and said they are looking into it so i'm hoping they will take care of the problem.

The phone comes with LOCAL maps pre-installed. That's why am not fond of buying a cell from eXact - you end up with an arabic manual and no actual guarantee.

I would suggest try installing Nokia Maps (or another GPS software) it's free as far as I know. PS You aren't restricted to Route66 - you may install any other software thats compatible with Symbian. I think the N95 uses the Nokia Maps software - but check it out.

The guys at eXact assured me they'll send the card with the map.....so crossed fingers...
They told me they hold the phones 2 year guarantee.

I tried downloading additional maps with the phone but there are charges involved. Do you know where i can get maps for this phone for free?

Also another thing...i installed an e-book thats in word. The phone does not recognise it. Do i need to purchase the software or is there a place were i can download it?

I checked out the deal with Nokia Maps. The maps & software are free to download from Nokia's website but to use the maps for GPS navigation you have to pay a subscription fee. I don't really know what's the point of having a GPS enabled phone and then just have maps on it !?

You should tell eXact to throw a CR-48 holder in for you - since you had so much inconvenience ;)

There's lots of software around for Symbian phones so I'm sure I've seen a dedicated e-book reader somewhere (Is the word doc saved in 97-2003 format and not the new 2007 format - the app would probably not recognise that format yet)

Where does one find a 2.5mm headset socket to plug into the 6110 so that one can connect it to an audio amp?

I made one for myself. Get a common 3.5mm extension, cut the one connecter and solder a 2.5mm connecter (cost <R10). I'm listening to the radio over my Logitechs right now using my 6110. To get hold of these try: Communica, Electronics123 - depending on your area. Check their websites. Feel free to PM me if you need further advice.

The normal 2.5mm post/connector has three contacts ( common , left and right signal ) . The Nokia one has 4 to accomodate the microphone. Are you saying the 3 contact one will work in the nokia ? I would have thought it shorts two signals together.

True, the headset connector has four poles to accommodate the mic & buttons. The normal 2.5mm connector has three poles - the one closest to the plastic jacket (i.e. the cable) being the ground. So you're just grounding your mic signal - perfectly safe. Just make sure that when you solder to put the ground (common) to the center of the connector (and the two signals at the side flanges). As I said I tested it and it works fine. I'm looking into a way to improve the reception - I want to attach an actual antenna to the connector cable. I'm not yet sure If I can connect this to the ground? Anyone know the electronic setup of these FM radios.

Music manager problems

When transferring music via the PC suite music manager to the 6110 the application shuts down and no music is transfered . It even does this when transferring to "My Collection" which is located on the PC. Any ideas ? Suspect its a bug of sorts.
Peter

It works fine with me. Have you tried connecting the phone in data transfer mode and then just copy & paste the music on your mem card? Try to diagnose of it's the PC suite software or the phone. Are you USB / Bluetooth? Did you have a previous version of PC suite installed?

I can't guess what's wrong, but having all the info always helps.

Can't think of the reason I'm having the problems , never had PC suite on before , the link usb seems to be working Ok , I can copy files etc arround. Do I have to convert files to mp4 or AAC? will the 6110 play mp3's?
Peter

I have downloaded the latestet PC suite and still have problems with music manager - Its actually the convertor to MP4 or AAC thats the problem. If conversion is not requested then all is fine . IS there a third party free music convertor out there?
Peter

Hi,
It will be great if you can you send me some usefull applications for Nokia 6110. Thanks in advance.

Adrian

The phone can play mp3, so why not. You could probably convert the files with something like dBPowerAmp.

Anyone found a way to import custom POI's ? Would like some speed camera warnings...

Doesn't look like you can buy these from route66. Not for South Africa anyway.

Have you been able to obtain maps from Route66? I keep getting an error message saying Payment Refused Error(420). Seems there are many on the net that have the same problems...Mastercard (SA) and Standard bank say there is nothing wrong with my card (also tried another Mastercard - same problem).

As far as I've read just backup you're mem card using PC suite, then restore it to another mem card. I believe the actual R66 software is on the phone memory - just maps on the card. (note: I haven't tested this)

All Nokia 6110 owners. I'll be getting my 6110 soon, as promised by MTN. I had a 6680 before, and quite successfully ran Fring (Skype) on the phone. That was with a 3G connection, and much older version of Symbian (quite slow).

Anyways, I'd really like to run Fring on my new phone, with an HSDPA connection. Perhaps get the phone on a weekender, and get a data bundle. I'll be phoning Skype enabled people, so this may make sense.

What are your thoughts on this?
